Just this past week I had 3 guests who shore dove with me (kick & scooter) rather than do their scheduled boat trips with Scuba Shack. They had four planned trips with SS, but the first was so bad they canceled the remaining three, even knowing they would lose the deposite for the second (24hr cancelation?). As per previous bad reviews on SB; they said the crew was fake friendly, arrogant, lecherous, with a mixed load 12 pack which negatively affected the experienced divers dives, ending with the usual fake cheering squad docking manouver telling everybody to vote for them as the best of the best of the best. The new divers on board that day all seemed to have had the best dives of their life, which is common with many operators (catch 'em before they know any better).

Today I shore dove with 2 guests that went with SS yesterday. With SS they did Reef's End drift in a current so strong they could not stop to see the critters and then Red Hill drift in a similar current, although they saw lots of turtles and eels (all good divers). Our kick dive today was out beyond the teeth cleaning station way beyond the end of Ulua Reef. They enjoyed today's shore dive more than Red Hill and way more than their Molokini dive, although that's not neccessarily always due to the boat operator. They will be going on the scooter/wreck dive with me either tomorrow or Monday.

I have never dove with SS, but the numerous guests I've spoken to who have dove with them have never had glowing things to say about them. Pretty much any other shore or boat operator on Maui has way less negative reviews than SS, no matter how many best of awards they purchased from some fluffy dive magazine! For some people peeing in the wet suit is just the way it is. As long as the gratuity is generous I will never complain if you pee in our rental suits.:D

I think that their web site says it all, plenty of room between the lines if you get my drift.

A rule NOT to pee? Well, I guess I'll never dive with them, at least not in a rental suit. I used to think it was impossible NOT to pee until I went over 100 dives in a row without doing so last year. It was one of the warmest summers in recent memory here off Catalina, which probably explains that. I often don't even know if I've pee'd or not because I'm focused on the important things on my dive.

There are other body fluids I'd be much more worried about IMHO. However, I agree... the smell of urine is not pleasant, especially if it is someone else's.

Dr. Bill, just cut out the asparagrass.

For what it's worth, if you could get a guarantee that the owner will not be on the boat or at the shore dive location, your chances of a good day go up exponentially.

Heh, heh... never touch the stuff!

You got it! One of their instructors staffed my IDC and is a good friend... there's nothing wrong with him -- but the owner finds one "special" young lady on every charter who will receive "extra" attention.

Oh, and the no-pee rule is more than just rental suits... they don't want anyone peeing in the wetsuits at all -- the joke is that the boat deck doubles for more *ahem* intimate purposes and the smell of urine isn't conducive to those activities.

Personally, I've dove with them before, and I would have no problem diving with them again. UNLESS, I was diving with a female friend. In which case, they'd be the last place I'd call.

The mixed groups are no big deal with them -- especially after they know your skills. When I went with them, I was a DM Candidate and my buddy was a recently minted DM. We were given more leeway ("just keep me in sight" said the DM), to the point of being allowed to stay down an extra 10 minutes or so (under the boat) since everybody else in the group had run out of air.

Bottom line: in-water experience -- awesome. Boat experience: so-so.

And cuddlefish: there's two types of people that wear wetsuits -- those that admit peeing in it, and those that lie about it. I do try to "flush" once it's happened (it's not to warm up, it's simply because I can't hold it), though sometimes it doesn't all wash out as well as one would hope.

I don't recall if there is a head on their boat -- I do think so, but I'm not 100%. I tend to prefer the head that all dive boats have... jump in after you've gotten the gear off, pull the wetsuit down halfway (or all the way, if it's after the last dive) and take care of business.

Thalassamania:
Normal urine is quite sterile, there are places in the world (e.g., India) where is is drunk as a medicine.

I knew someone was going to say this! Here's an example of what I meant....if someone handed me an unopened bottle of spring water, I'd drink it. If someone asked me to find a pipe laying on the side of the road or in a garbage dump....then pour the spring water through it and drink it, I wouldn't. Just because the water was sterile, didn't mean the pipe it came through was sterile. Maybe the pipe had a bladder infection, a yeast infection, maybe it had any number of vile diseases....so who cares if urine is sterile. So until you are willing to drink the urine of every diver on the boat, saying that urine is sterile doesn't mean anything to me.
