Hello all.
My name is Gary and I have always wanted to get into SCUBA. I 'm hoping to get my Advanced Open Water certification soon so I can volunteer time at my local aquarium for tank maintenace and fish observation. My love for sharks of all types is huge and this is a goal I've always wanted to achieve.

I'm 23 and live in Centerville Ohio. I'm coming up on my second anniversary with my wife, Leslie. My family consists of an Alaskan Malamute named Rascal, a Siberian Husky/German Shepherd mix named Skitter, and Leopard Gecko named Kramer.

My only knowledge of SCUBA has come from TV, books, and the web and I look forward to learning a lot here and talking with great people. Oh yeah, one small detail...I have yet to see the ocean. Man, I've got a lot to learn!
Thanks everyone.

Welcome to the board

I'm sure you will love diving with the sharks. You will have to hit the ocean though, seeing them in the wild is much better than in a tank.

There is also a lot more to see than sharks....

You can find out anything you want to know about scuba here.

Enjoy and have fun.

TT ;)

Hi Gary,

What a wonderful adventure you have ahead of you!! I'm envious of the aquarium dives - I've always wanted to try that, at least once.

Once you've finished your AOW, you'll have to come down here to Florida for a visit. It's ocean diving at its best and easiest. Check out the Florida Conchs forum, espeically the Private Trips area for photos and trip reports of the dives we do around here.

I highly recommend coming down for several days and combining some beach and boat diving to get a feel for salt water diving. I've done plenty of both, and have become addicted to beach diving, since it's inexpensive and the schedule's flexible. From West Palm Beach south, there is a wonderful reef system just 100 yards or so off shore, and you can see an amazing variety of fish life on a very shallow (16-25 fsw) dive.

Anyway, welcome to the board and to the sport,
Grier

Welcome Aboard!!!

It's addictive, but who cares?!?!?

Good friends and good info. What could be better???

P.S. - If you have not already done so, please fill out your profile.

Thank you all for welcoming me aboard. I look forward to learning a great deal and meeting a lot of wonderful people.

I already have a vacation planned for Goldsboro NC this November 5-7 at Seymour-Johnson AFB. I hope to have my AOW by then and am planning to see the ocean at least for one day. Does anyone know what the sea temp is in NC in early November? If its cold enough, I would love to make a dry suit dive as one of the 3 additional AOW dives. I am also really thinking about a Florida trip next summer to get more underwater experience.

Again, thanks everyone.
