So I just got some new gear, mostly stuff I had been having to rent for a while. Now I'm diving a LP Steel 95 with a 30 cuft pony attached via a bottle buddy. Reg on the pony has an octo hose so its a little longer. Stowing the pony reg via a rubber tube necklace.

I'm not quite sure how this thing is going to handle in open ocean but from what I can already tell I'm not too keen on this massive 30 cuft pony hanging off my right side. I could get a smaller one, but that thread a while ago on SAC rate with a 19 conviced me to go with the 30.

My question to all you in scuba land is what alternative to mounting the pony to your main tank do you use?

Have you compared the weights on the 30 and 19? Not much difference. Care to trade your 30 for my 19?

I started out carry my pony on the side of my main tank, then had an incident because I could not see it - therefore could not see the leak, no the spg. The one time I needed it, it was nearly worthless.

I carry mine slung on the left hanging from D rings on my BC, so I can see everything, reach everything. And I carry 3# less lead on that side to keep myself balanced.

I carry my 40 on my left side , it swims very nice and can hardly tell its there unless im looking at my SPG

Remember that when diving buoyancy (+ or -) will be the dominant attribute, not weight. Meaning it should only require a few pounds of weight to the opposite side to restore balance. Actually the full pony is negative so in the end you probaby remove some from that side. There's not much getting around the extra mass and drag, more gear is more gear.

I do frequently read of divers slinging a pony so that's an option.

congrats on owning the equipment.

Alignment can be a funny thing. If you watch which direction the equipment is rolling you, you should be able to counter-balance it pretty easily / intuitively.
