Hello ScubaBoard Friends.
I am looking for some opinions and pro's and con's about the SB G2 vs. the SW Peregrine AI vs. SB Luna
Background
1) My wife and I both dive with older (bought used) SB Galileo (one is a SOL) computers now that I am looking to upgrade before they fail.
2) Both are Air Integrated so we already own SB transmitters which have been finicky but I can only remember one dive were mine never picked up.
3) We both dive with SPG so a failed transmitter is not a show stopper.
4) Our eyes are not getting any younger and the screen on older Galileo can be difficult to read in some situations (night), even on the surface.
5) I have read the discussions on Algorithms, and while important to understand what and why your computer is telling you to do something we have never been locked out. The only issue I can thing of having in this area is safety stop times starting and ending being particular. We have not had an issue with extended DECO times or lockouts using SB Algorithms. We have never had a dive with any DECO other than safety stop.
Factors I am evaluating, and would like to hear some opinions on
1) We already have SB transmitters, the SW transmitters almost double the cost of the Peregrine vs. the Luna 2.0 AI and put the G2 in the same price range as the Peregrine with transmitter.
2) The G2 appears to have an easier to ready screen, and would be familiar but doesn't add a lot of value to us beyond that.
3) The Luna 2.0 AI has a user replaceable battery, I am leaning more towards rechargeable with less risk of "user error" during replacement.
4) While we don't use the compass on our current computers, seems like a an easy add not sure why it's not on the Luna.
5) The SW Predix 2 is more computer than we will ever use, however the Peregrine seems like the "sweet" spot.
6) I have not been able to find a bad review for either the Peregrine or Predix and all reports are the customer service is outstanding.
7) Is the Peregrine that much better than the Luna to justify the cost?

Thanks in Advance

Hi Frank and welcome to SB

If as you mentioned you just do NDL diving (with the accidental 1-2 extra minutes of Deco) then all 3 should be (in a way) equivalent on that front

I dive a G2 myself — the algorithm being a bit of a blackbox is a bit of a hindrance when planning deco dives, but I digress

Re your evaluation points:
1) which generation SP transmitters you have?
For SW, you can use Swift (the ones they make) or “generic” MH8 ones (aqualung, oceanic…)
Others who actually use SW cam provide better input

2) the g2 screen is quite awesome, I love how its UI looks, the graphical depth profile with stops overlays, the UI benefits are probably why I didn’t ditch it in favor of a SW — not sure there is a question here

3) I have the same preference as you — also button batteries tend to not have so much juice in them

4) so, the Luna2 is at such a price point because it doesn’t have a pixel screen; it has predefined segments; so it can do some preset logos + digits

5) yes

6)100%

7) 100% as well
If I was buying my 1st computer now instead of 2020, I would have gotten the Peregrine over the g2 — I wouldn’t consider the luna2
(Ok probably I’d consider the Perdix instead, but that’s due to a bias towards technical diving on my side)

I hope that helps

You have the SP transmitters, that's a lot of money to waste. I'd go with G2. I have a couple of people who bought it few months ago and love it without any issues at all.

I have been using the G2 for about 2 years and no issues. It is the wrist model and use the Scubapro transmitter. My backup is the Oceanic Data 3 Plus console.

Mike, BoltSnap and Mobulai,
Thank you for sharing your insights with me and answering the questions I have. I will either sell our current Galileos and transmitters and purchase the Peregrines, or go with the G2. I will update back to this thread on what we did and progress. I don't expect we will do anything until after the New Year unless there is a sale we can't resist. Thanks again!

7) yes. Peregrine TX
I'd get a used transmitter (not Swift) for $180 or so, and not look back.
