No coz pics, but we have lived in Mexico for quite a while in the past...

Why? Easy

1)Economics
2)Availability
3)Fishing Season
4)Hurricanes
5) Any or all of the above... You pick...

And the hamburgers at the McDonalds are also made with the famous Argentinian beef. They are fantastic.

I have had 2 experiences in 2 years where we have been served frozen imported lobster while in Mexico. Once in cozumel, and I forget the name so i dont want to make a mistake by mentioning it, and once at the (ironically) "Puerto Madero Buenos Aires" restaurant at Marina Barracuda in Cancun. We had high hopes for this supposed Argentinian Steak House and Fish Market, and the ONLY fresh fish on the menu was the grouper. I know, we asked the Maitre'd and were shown the kitchen and selection.

Unless of course the Caribbean Lobster now comes with claws...

I've never personally seen or heard of anything but Caribbean lobster in Cozumel...I can't speak for Cancun or any other part of Mexico except to say that things are done completely different in Cozumel in many respects than even our neighbors to the NW in Cancun. Despite the geographic proximity to one another, they are two TOTALLY different places. The commercial fishermen in Coz work year round and lobster is readily available all the time. I don't see how importing Maine lobster to Cozumel would be economically worthwhile...but what do I know?

I have been going to Cozumel and eating in the restaurants there since 1978, and I have never once been served, or seen someone else being served, a lobster with claws. My guess is that if such a thing were to happen, it would be at someplace like Pepe's and rather than trying to "pass" it for local lobster, they would make a point of it being imported and charge accordingly. Irrespective of whether it ever happens, by and large the lobster served in Cozumel restaurants is locally obtained, as is just about all the seafood there except for shrimp.

???

Why would any Cozumel restaurant serve Maine lobster?

Aren't all the shrimp flown in? might as well bus in some big bigs also, although I prefer the spiny lobster over the Maine anyday.

Another 'don't miss' restaurant is Prima's. It is italian and not really romantic but we HAVE to eat there atleast twice on each trip to Coz. Lasagna to die for!!! Also the coconut ice cream with Kalua is a must too.

In terms of having fast food restaurants in Coz, I would say that if you have ever traveled with a 5 year old you would understand how important a weekly fix of chicken nuggets can be to them!!!!!!

There used to be an Italian place around the corner from Prima towards the Plaza. They moved there from their old location by the old Las Tortugas location. I don't remember the name. They were not open last year. I wonder if the Chef moved to some other establishment. The food was very good. The old name was La Cucina Italiano.

JW- They still serve flattened chicked at that location. They actually have them all over the place. I picked onbe up last year just for the nostalgia effect.

If you want to impress your lovely wife, make pre-arrangements at La Veranda to get the table by the Gazebo. I dont know if it is still there. It is the furthest table in the garden. It will wow her.

The table in the gazebo is very nice, too...

Another thing about Prima's is that they have one of the most (if not the most) extensive wine lists of any restaurant on the island.

I'm thinking it was El Moreno. That seems to ring a bell in my mind.
Thanks Christi

I am a big fan of La Morena. here are some pics for last Feb. Sher and I were the only ones in the place, but it was a bit early for dinner... the pictures of the courtyard don't really do it justice. When it is dark, the lights really make it look nice.

It's on my short list, too. One of the principals in that restaurant is Jose Santos, who used to be the head waiter up the street at Capi Navegante. He and his brother Leo, one of the staff at Las Palmeras, are old friends of ours.

The Popeye squid there (stuffed with bacon and spinach) is superb.
