Another convert from HP to LP!

Just curious, what is it you like about the LP Steel Tanks?

You are currently owning/diving a HP Steel 100 right?

I have 2 HP100's (one worthington and one genesis) that I really like but the LP 72 was comfortable. As soon as I got to depth I was the most streamlined I have ever been and I felt at ease. I did not have to tweek my gear all that much and I just liked the feel for it. My trim was perfect for the entire dive and my buoyancy was easy to maintain.

My HP100's are nice also, and I get trimmed out with no problem but sometimes (but not always) I feel like I fight my buoyancy. Its good at the beginning, the middle, or the end of the dive depending on tank position and weighting. But not always throughout the dive. The LP tank made my buoyancy consistent throughout the dive and I was able to do my safety stop at 15 feet with very little movement on my part. I hovered with no fuss and was happy about it. Since I doubt I became radically enlightened from one dive to the next, and the only change was the different tank, I would like to have at least on LP72 in my arsenal of dive gear.

I am hopeful to find out where I can get one or three. It was a great tank.

If you look closely at the markings on the crown, you may be able to find a manufacturer's mark, which should tell you who made the tank:

Thanks Gombessa. I looked and there was nothing stamped on the neck of the tank but the info I already listed. I looked for a mark of some sort or a name and nothing other than the DOT stamp, the serial number and the hydro dates. That was why I came here to see about any other info that you guys might have. I thought the tank measurements might help since they seemed unusual to me but apparently, this was a common tank and common measurements back in the day. I just want to make sure that if I find a good tank out there, that it will have the same or similar buoyancy characteristics as the one I used.

I appreciate the info though.

PST and Norris were the most common with Walter Kidde less common. I have 10 with about 6 being Norris and 4 PST. PST is usually stamped on their tanks. Norris is an N inside a diamond. HJ is before the serial number on all my Norris tanks, one is stamped Healthways. The PST's are stamped either US Divers, Voit or Dacor. The oldest is a 1957 PST stamped Voit that I bought new in 1957.
They also make great twins, when manifolded together with a single post manifold.

Here is a list of manufacturers symbles.

I'll take a shot and put $1 on Pressed Steel. If so, a tank from the late 70's should have PST or Pst on it. If there is no manufactuers symble, look for the test labs symble, it may be between the month and year or be off set, the placement changed over the years.

A Pressed Steel use Cochran Labs with a symble of a L in and C, Norris used Industral Analysis whose symble is a I superimposed over an A.

But I don't worry about the tank manufacturer as the sizes are just about the same and they all double up well.

the serial number started with HJ and I think the original hydro was in 1979 but I am not positive. My buddy is sometimes hard to reach so I may not get any more info about the tank until we dive again.

As captain said, that is a Norris tank, but it doesn't matter... the PST are the same.

I own 14 of the steel 72 (12 singles, and one set of doubles) and about half are PST and half are Norris, and they are all very similar. And I am sorry , but none of them are for sale... heck one can't have too many steel 72's.

Luis, you are teasing me and that is just down right wrong. Are you sure you cant let two of your 14 go for me. They dont even have to match as I am not interested in doubling them at all.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate all who have helped here. Maybe I will post in the classified section that I want to buy 2 old LP 72 tanks. Maybe I will have more luck. At least now I know what I am looking for.

Look around, last December I got two for $20 each, after hydro etc. it was still less then $50 each.

Check Craig's list and the local dive shops. A lot of times an older dive shop will have a few in the back that they no longer use.
