Hi.. this is my first thread...
I found a cheap used reg & consul set on kijiji... just wanted to know whether this seems like it's worth it...

It is a mares axis reg...it has a suunto gauge up to 5000psi....the secondary just says mares I'm not sure what kind it is. They're asking $75. Said it's in good condition... needs servicing.
Any help would be appreciated!

What first stage is the Mares Axis paired with?

The Axis is what I would consider an entry-level 2nd stage. It is probably paired with either the MR-12 1st stage (a very good, balanced diaphragm 1st stage, I have 4 of them) or the MR-2 1st stage (an unbalanced piston, simple, reliable).

New, these sold for about $180-200 or so, without gauges or octo.

You'll need to get the regulator serviced, which may run about $25 per stage, plus parts (maybe another $40). So $75 price + maybe $90 service = $165 before you can dive it.

If the gauge is just a pressure gauge & hose (no depth or compass combo), it was worth just over $100 new.

I think the deal sounds "borderline" for what I'd say the stuff is worth.

After you pay for service, you'll end up with about a 50% saving compared to the same gear new. The sad truth is that scuba gear does not hold its value that well.

You may want to save up just a little bit more, and look for new stuff... but there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying used, and nothing wrong with the gear you are looking at (if it is in good shape). I just think if you shop around a little more (ebay, etc.) You might be able to move up a couple notches without breaking the bank.

Best wishes.

I'm not being a spelling nitpicker but we're talking scuba gear here.

Its called a "console".

Its called a "console".

Maybe he's french "consul'"

And welcome! Ima bad speller two

Don't feel the need to jump to fast. As indicated you need to know how much it will cost to get serviced and if you can do so locally or have to ship out.

You can buy a new 1st and 2n stage for as little as $130 your about there with service and parts. If the console has a depth guage and in good condition and NOT LEAKING BIG IF then it could be borderline.

You will also most likely want a Octo and a hose to fill your BC if you have to buy those seperate the price goes up and you could possibly find a full set with little use for less.

Find out more about what it is exactly and then search some new stuff at the online stores you read about here. And go to your local dive shop and see if they have some recently serviced used sets.

Hello Ksherman,

Welcome to Scuba Board.

Buying a used regulator on eBay, etc can be a good deal if you know how to service a regulator yourself or have a very trusted shop you are familiar with that will do it for you; other than that, you would be better served by contacting (send a PM) someone who rebuilds regulators like DA Aquamaster http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=12863 or BlueWaterDiving http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=7753 and ask if either has a rebuilt ready to sell.

Good luck,

Couv
