Now that I'm getting comfortable in the water, I'm actually seeing some of the ocean life instead of spending all my time with my gear. Saw yellow Sea Raven last week, but had no idea what it was. I can tell a lobster from a starfish, but much more than that.

What is a good reference book to start with?

That's a great book; hope you enjoy it

I have and use Marine Life of the No Atlantic, but for dive site fish ID, I also have the REEF waterproof fish card. It's got most of the "usual suspects" on it, and you can actually bring it diving with you if you want. They're sold at a lot of dive shops (I know Cape Ann Divers has them) and they're cheap ($8-10)

Also from REEF is this book... a lot more information that the Martinez book (which is beautiful, and covers a wide variety of invertebrates, but doesn't have a lot of fish).
