I ran across this old Mac G3, and I have never even touched a mac before.

I would like to use it for internet access in my newly remodeled basement (now a scuba repair, storage and maintenance room :D).

This laptop does not have an Ethernet cable input, just a phone cable. But it does have a slot (us IBM-ers would call it a PCI slot) that I think is CardBus (?).

My question is, can I but an internet card to use this G3 in my basement? I already have the cable down there, and I have wireless, also.

Sorry buddy can't help you out. I do love my macs though.
Gee, thanks.

Since nobody else has responded, maybe this will help:

You didn't say what model this was, only G3 laptop, and that it doesn't
have ethernet. I started using macs with G4, but no ethernet sounds very
low-end, so I guessed ibook (the plastic-case consumer line).

So, look at iBook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Every G3 ibook had built-in ethernet. If they had it, the powerbooks certainly did.
So, either this isn't a G3, or it has ethernet and you don't recognize it, or
I'm missing something (which is possible).

Lets start by seeing if we can identify the model with some certainty.
Look at iBook: How to Identify iBook Models
If it turns out this isn't an ibook, see the related links on the apple support site,
and note that Apple keeps all the support stuff on their site even for older
models.

Identify the model. This will then tell you whether and where it has an
ethernet port, and if it doesn't, what your expansion options are.
You have me curious now, so let us know what you resolve this as,
or ask for more help.

Ah HA! Thanks for the links. I went online and, while reading "how to identify g3 modles", saw a graphic that showed me that there is a door in the rear that opens, and sure enough, ethernet plug! :D

Now to see if it works...

If it were me, I'd toss it and get a new one.

I've got 4 computers at work and two at home. This one would just be for browsing scubaboard from the basement/shop so I don't have to bring the laptop upstairs.
