The square image on a member's posts​

BB Code
Bulletin Board Code, the code used to format text and images in ScubaBoard posts.​

Bit
The most basic unit in binary computing.​

Blog
Blog is slang for weblog (Web Log). Blogs are website “entries”, usually in informal diary-style Posts.​

Bookmark (Browser)
Bookmarks, also called Favorites or Internet shortcuts, consist of a selected Web page's URL, or Internet address, with a descriptive name on a menu in Web browsers.​

Bookmarks (ScubaBoard)
Members can "Bookmark" interesting posts as another way to relocate them.​

Bot
Internet bots or robots are software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Search engine applications gather data for Google and Bing for example.​

BRB
Internet acronym for Be Right Back​

Broken Link
A hypertext link that is no longer pointing to a valid Web page. Common caused include Web pages are deleted (including YouTube videos), URLs are changed, or Web sites no longer exist.​

Browser or Web browser
The computer program or app you are viewing this Web page with. Common names include Chrome, Edge, Foxfire, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari.​

Board or Bulletin Board
This is where the name ScubaBoard came from.​

Click & Drag (selection/highlighting)
Method for selecting items on the screen. Position the mouse pointer, depress the left-mouse button, and and drag (move) for the desired selection.​

Click Bait
Content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage readers to click on a link.​

Clipboard
Relates to Cut, copy, and paste

CMV
Internet acronym for Change My View​

Cloud (computing)
The “cloud” describes online computing and storage (cloud storage) existing in professionally managed data centers, usually distributed over wide geographic areas for reliability and security. ScubaBoard runs on cloud servers.​

Cut, Copy, & Paste
Clipboard with Cut, Copy, & Paste is a function on most computing devices.​

Internet acronym for Does Anybody Else​

DNS
Domain Name System which is an Internet registry that connects domain names to IP addresses.​

Dog Piling
Joining others in such a manner as to make a member feel threatened and unwelcome.​

Drag & Drop
Method for moving items on screens. Select an object by positioning the pointer over an object, depress the left-mouse button, and and drag (move) to the desired location. Not all selections on a screen are programmed as movable objects.​

DPI
Dots Per Inch, a common printer quality measurement.​

Emoji
An emoji is a ideogram used in electronic messages and web pages.​

Emoticon or emote
Derived from "emotion icon", is a pictorial representation of a facial expression using standard keyboard characters. Example: :-) ;-)​

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions, a common phrase used in Websites.​

Flame or Flaming
Insulting, needlessly critical, or harassing posts that are often intended to boost a member's ego more than inform or debate. Several ScubaBoard forums that are designed for inexperienced members to ask questions are "No Flame Zones".​

Follow (ScubaBoard members)
Designating members that you choose to "follow" so their posts display in your News Feed.​

Forum (ScubaBoard)
A section of ScubaBoard for threads on a specific subject. See: What is ScubaBoard?

FTFY
Internet acronym for Fixed That For You​

Go Red
A common phrase for becoming a Supporter, Sponsor, or Business Sponsor of ScubaBoard.​

Hijack
A thread hijack is posting content that is off-topic and not relevant to the thread or forum where you are posting.​

HTML
Hypetext Markup Language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. Many file use the .html or .htm extension.​

ScubaBoard forums that are designated as Learning Zones have special rules to help members who are are not familiar with a particular subject or specialty.​

Legend (ScubaBoard)
A ScubaBoard member chosen by Staff who have a long history of contributing to the Scuba diving. They are identified by a yellow badge below their avatar.​

LOL
Internet acronym for Laughing Out Loud (also found in TXTspeach)​

Lurker
People reading ScubaBoard who haven't become members, which is how every member begins.​

Member
A person who has registered as a member on ScubaBoard.​

Moderator
Volunteer ScubaBoard Staff members responsible for helping members, responding to Reports, and enforcing the ToC.​

Mouseover
Mouseover is also known as mouse hover, pointer hover, and hover box. Allowing your pointer to linger over mouseover-enabled elements triggers a small window to display.​

OS
Computer Operating System. The five most popular OSs as of this writing are Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Linux, Android, and Apple's iOS.​

Pixel
Individual dots on a computer display and digital image.​

Rich Text Format or RTF
A simple and well-supported word processing file format that ScubaBoard's editor has reasonable copy & paste support.​

Website that deliver search results of the WWW based on user-entered key works. Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and DuckDuckGo are popular examples.​

Simulpost
When two or more members post within moments, unaware that they all responded to the same question.​

Smiley or Smilies
Derived "smiley face", is a basic ideogram that represents a smiling face. The definition has been expanded on ScubaBoard to include a large set of predefined and easily inserted images.​

Sockpuppet
A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. Multiple accounts on ScubaBoard for one member will be considered a sockpuppet is prohibited and grounds for suspension.​

Spam
Irrelevant, inappropriate, and/or unsolicited messages that often advertise products or services.​

Stalking
Following a member from thread to thread to humiliate, embarrass or otherwise cajole a member in order to make them feel unwelcome.​

SWMBO
Internet acronym for She Who Must Be Obeyed (see also HWMBO). Female SO​

SO
Internet acronym for Significant Other (Partner, spouse, or similar).​

Thread
A discussion "thread" inside of a forum. See: What is ScubaBoard?

Thumbnail (computing)
A miniature representation of a page or image that suggests the content it is linked to. Basically an teaser.​

TLDR

Troll
Internet slang for a person who starts flame wars or intentionally upsets people with inflammatory, rude, or off-topic messages.​

ToS
ScubaBoard's Terms of Service​

Touch interface
Method of interacting with computing devices with a touch screen such as smart phones, tablets, and many laptops.​

Virtual Private Network​

A website that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its users. The most famous and extensive example is Wikipedia.​

WYSIWYG
What You See Is What You Get describes word processing programs and ScubaBoard's editor — unless you are in the BB code view.​

World Wide Web​
