Has anyone tried both the MX-5 and MX-5 II (with strobe)? I've currently got one of the older MX-5's, and noticed that Sea & Sea has an upgrade program where you can send in your old camera (plus some cash) and get the newer model that will handle the closeup lens and external strobe.
The total cost for this upgrade woule be around $342 ($72 for the camera upgrade, $215 for the strobe and $55 for the lens).
I've searched for "mx5" and seen mostly bad comments regarding it. Having used mine on a few dives, I know it is capable of decent pictures (well, to a fledgling UW photographer like myself, anyway), but also easily produces backscatter-rich pictures if you're not careful.
I guess I'm interested in hearing from someone who's actually used both and can comment on the improvements (if any) of the external flash. My initial thought is that the upgrade cost is pretty steep, but if it results in a significant improvement in the pictures, then it might be worth it.
Someone mentioned that the flash was facing forward. I saw one recently at a scuba show, and as I recall, it was facing forward, but at a slight angle toward the camera. I did not check to see if it would rotate or if it was fixed. Based on the light-pickup scheme they used, it looks like it would need to be attached to the camera to work.
