Any of the newer wicking thermals work fine, poly pro is the old standby favorite, some use wool, thermax, lots of the newer stuff for hunting is fine. Just make sure it's not cotton.

"Capilene" stuff by Patagonia is very good as a wicking base layer, though it isn't cheap.

I got my wife this: https://cdsportswear.com/wf_style1.htm Carol Davis Sportwear jumpsuit as the against the skin layer, with her dry suit.
She has been very comfortable with the combination-warm but with flexibility--and is still happy to go diving which is the best result, as she hates being cold.
