Any of the newer wicking thermals work fine, poly pro is the old standby favorite, some use wool, thermax, lots of the newer stuff for hunting is fine. Just make sure it's not cotton.
 
"Capilene" stuff by Patagonia is very good as a wicking base layer, though it isn't cheap.
 
We had a saying when I was in the Coast Guard running small boats on Lake Erie.....
