I'm a student heading to Maui for four or five days for a physics confence about the third week of september. I'm looking to see if I can squeeze in a dive while I'm out there.
I'm just getting into diving right now so I'll need to find a place to my equitment. Being a college student I'm also relatively tight on funds.
Does anyone know of a good place where I can dive without breaking the bank? Thanks

Boat diving in Hawaii is extremely expensive ($100+ for 2 tanks), so you might be better off planning some shore diving. There are some very good places to beach dive, renting tanks is inexpensive, and you can rent gear at the same time. If you want to hire a guide, check with ShakaDoug, he's the shore diving MAN on Maui.

I'll second ShakaDoug... he'll also give you the low down on where to party each night.

Which night is cheap sushi night again?

For the best deals on equipment rental, I'd suggest Maui Dreams Dive Co. ( http://www.mauidreamsdiveco.com/ ) -- I haven't seen better prices, and when you get there, there may be better deals/policies. I've returned full tanks after having them for a day and not been charged... that sort of thing.

Incidentally, they also keep a buddy book so you can find someone to dive with, without having to pay Doug or another DM.

You'll see a lot of "Maui Dive Shops" around -- their prices aren't bad, but there's lots of "gotchas" in their prices. Do check them out, though -- their free "Maui Dive Guide" has shore diving location recommendations, with short blurbs on each one. They'll even mail it out to you ahead of time!

HTH,

Do you know where you'll be on Maui yet? If in Kihei I'd second Maui Dreams for gear and Shaka Doug for a guide. If you'll be in the Lahaina area Pacific Dive seems to have the best prices on gear rentals in that area.

Aloha, Tim

I'm not totally sure about this because I've never really done any research on the area, but it looks like the conference I'm attending is being held in Kapalua, north of Lahaina. The Maui Dream diving place appears to be a bit farther than I'll be able to feasebly get to. Any more tips on diving on the northern part of the island? Thanks

I may be diving with another SB member on Monday, Sept. 19th - if you'd care to join us feel free to let me know... It will be up North (I live in Lahaina)

Do you know the exact dates you'll be here?

Aloha, Tim
