I went diving in a cool (but not cold--surface 75, at depth 60 degrees F) lake this weekend, and my mask fogged like crazy! The same thing happened at earlier dives in lake with some problems, but now things are out of hand. Yes, I used defog (more than one type, and defoggers that I usually have pretty good results from), and the mask was cleaned and properly prepped. Still fogged. I've never had this problem with other masks (I've had this one since the end of last summer), and it's got me stumped.
Okay, experts. What are your magic methods for prepping a mask so that it stands a chance of staying clear? I'm open to almost any suggestions.

Try cleaning it a second time with toothpaste and your finger. Sometimes the glass coating is pretty tough to get off the first time.

I'm no "expert", but I can speak from personal experience.

you probably don't want to hear this but you might want to get a new mask. My dive wife struggled for over a year with a fogging mask, after trying all the tricks, i.e. toothpaste, defoggers, etc. I thought she was crazy and was blowing air out of her nose or something that was causing the mask to fog...until we swapped masks for a snorkel...she had no problems with my mask, while I struggled with fogging the whole time with hers. I new mask will be purchased soon...it's just not worth the trouble.

Call me crazy, but I don't think a mask should be problematic for so long. Any mask I've ever owned I was able to prevent it from fogging within a couple of treatments...

Some tricks include, toothpaste(not gel), defoggers, and saliva, and rubbing kelp on the inside lens prior to the dive.

good luck.

if you give the mask a thorough cleaning on the inside with toothpaste,
and use a commercial defoger at least 10 minutes prior to the dive, and
then rinse the mask just once and wear it, and you're still having problems,
you may need to get a new mask

Guba,

May I suggest trying some of the world renowned . . .

"KRAKEN SPIT"

. . . the greatest mask defogger ever produced!

It can be purchased at any Wal-Mart under the pseudonym of "Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo".

On a DRY mask, put a drop on each lens, smear around completely and then gently rinse.

Usualy when defoggers fail it's due to being rinsed too much. Clean the maks again just to be sure then read the directions on the defogger your using. Some want to be wet some want to go on a dry mask and then be allowed to dry again. Use it as the directions tell you, rinse once and put it on and don't take it off untill your done with the dive....Hope this saves you from buying a new mask.
Good luck!

I had a similar problem with fogging on my OW pool dives. As suggested I used toothpaste and soft scrub. I also used baby shampoo as a defog. My fogging is gone and had great checkout dives. Don't give up on it yet. I swear it took like 10 times of cleaning letting dry and repeating.

Baby shampoo never has worked well for me... I fog up when I use it...
Clean the glass and skirt very well, the goal is to remove any oils, silicone grease, etc. The mild abbrasive quality of toothpaste works well. If you are rubbing the lens with an oily finger you may be making things worse. Try using a dry cotton cloth to wipe the glass with then keep your fingers off. You can test it in your tub tonight at bath time :)

Your problem is that you like to keep your body temp too high. Try working on getting your core temp to about 86, if that doesn't work, buy 2 new masks and a new regulator.
