Any concerns about the brightness while underwater? I read that it's hard to see the display even at max brightness.
Also, do you think it's suitable for tech divera as an alternative to something like a Perdix?
Thanks!
Comparing the screen with a Perdix, for example, which we have many of in the dive club, it’s true that it looks different.
The Mares screen is 'kind of backlit,' whereas the Perdix screen 'illuminates the numbers.' This difference makes the Perdix easier to read in many conditions. As I mentioned, in the end, they are not really comparable.
That being said, except in direct light conditions or similar situations, no one has complained about the Mares being hard to read. In night dives and cave diving, it performs very well. I'm leaving you a clip and some photos—especially considering the price.
We constantly swap dive computers within our team to check if there's a real difference in data, which is what matters to us.
With other brands, we’ve found that even when setting identical GF values, the data at the end of the dive was, at the very least, quite different.
Just yesterday, we did a dive with a total of 46 minutes of deco. Four divers used a Crest CR5, Perdix, Mares Quad CI, and Mares Sirius. There was
no difference in the total stop count or the decompression calculations among the computers.

What I mean to say (and I’ve been the biggest hater of many brands) is that
objectively, unless you’re doing extremely technical dives, we haven’t seen any significant discrepancies between Mares and Shearwater.
That being said, some people might not be able to afford or simply don’t want to spend a fortune on a dive computer, and there are other equally valid options. Many of my GUE buddies still dive with a depth gauge, hahaha.
What is true, however, is that unlike Shearwater or other more 'technical' brands, if you skip deco, the computer locks you out because it enters 'error' mode. Despite that, you do have the option to reset the tissues, but it’s still a fact to consider.
This type of debate is common in the groups/forums we are part of. In fact, we have a Telegram group with 1,500 people of all kinds, and it's a frequent discussion topic.
Many people, after real-world comparisons with their OSCT, Ratio, or Shearwater, have changed their minds.
But I keep repeating my opinion—when it comes to
build quality, it’s different (let’s call it more recreational), but the price is
ridiculously low compared to its features.
All of this is just my personal opinion, okay? I also have a Perdix and several other dive computers.
