Can anyone tell me if PADI standards allow for a mapping project to be completed at any dive site?

The reason I ask is that I'll be in warm water over Christmas and would like to do my mapping project there, as opposed to my cold, home waters.

I've got a call into my instructor at my LDS, but I thought I'd check here, too.

TIA.

Look in your instrutor manual:

Skill 1 — Mapping Project
Have divemaster candidates survey an open water dive site
and create a detailed map of the site showing (as applicable
to the site) underwater relief, important points of interest,
any relevant environmental notes, recommended entry/exit
areas, local facilities, and potential hazards.

There is nothing in the IM that dictates were a mapping project can be done. That will be a discussion between you and your Instructor. It will come down to the question: How will your instructor verify the map?

It's been done at our shop, but either during an organized trip with an Instructor, or by providing local contact information so that the Instructor could contact someone locally who could verify the map for them.

You would have to arrange for a referral of that skill with both your current dive center, and also the instructor where you will be taking your holiday.

I did this... it is possible.

My instructor "strongly suggested" we do a spot locally so that he could verify the map, and also so it would be usable, especially as part of a dive briefing. It needed to include the emergency action plan and contacts for that site. I found that much more valuable than just mapping a site I'd never return to. It has less to do with you ability to draw a map and more to do with recognizing the underwater terrain, entry/exit points, hazards, etc. Those can be tough to identify in an unfamiliar spot.

And no, I did not do Casino Point!

My what???

I was not aware I required or needed one. hmm.

Depends on when you started your program.

I started in '09 and did one. Has this changed?

TMHeimer - I do not understand what you mean by "did one".

BradnerBoy's question was in regards to having a copy of the Instructor Manual. PADI DMC's are to have a copy of the Instructor Manual - that has been a requirement since 01 June 2010.

I spoke to my instructor and it was, in fact, because I registered for the class in Sept '09 and at the time, it was not part of the crew pack.

I now have the PDF

Thanks all for the input.

Cool. You will find it useful, especially when you are asisting classes. You will also find it nice to be able to refer to the IM for questions on "Standards" that get raised.
