Other names that come up when someone asks for instructor recommendations are Susan Grant and Maciek Arkuszewski (?) (Marina del Rey Sports Chalet?, at least one of them), Fred Colbrun and Don Bunch (Pacific Wilderness- San Pedro ) John Lumb (Reef Seekers- formerly Beverly Hills), and Grant Graves and Charles Ingram (Malibu Divers). I have not personally taken courses from any of them.
PADI gets bashed a lot, but the standards at the other major agencies are not much different. The bottom line is you become proficient in the water by diving a lot with people who know what they are doing. A formal dive club or internet group like Scubaboard, Divevets or South Coast Divers is a good way to get experience.
