It seems like looking at the ratio of good reaction scores to total posts (and screening out people with only a few posts since there wouldn’t be much statistical relevance in those cases) would create a decent metric showing how helpful any given member’s posts were seen by the community. Of course, one can just look at any given person’s two numbers and calculate it. But that’s a person by person thing. It might be interesting to have a list somewhere on the site listing perhaps the hundred most positive ratios, as that might make it easy to go through those people’s posts and see interesting things we might’ve missed. On the other hand, if such a list would just create bad feelings, it might not be worth it.

This, like many such popularity schemes, are too easily gamed to no one's benefit other than the gamer.
So it would be just like using the current reactions to gauge the outcome?

The difference being that a reaction score takes a fraction of a second to complete. Where if I have to go in and say I value these 5 posters the most and type their names into my profile it requires intent.

The idea being that it's not difficult, but prevents the click clicking that has gotten. Some of us to the such large reaction scores.

To which @letterboy replies “Yea, and?”
I mean, I'm not saying I don't get a kick out of gaming the system but...stay on topic please...

:rofl3:

You appear to think that I am in favor or using reaction scores to judge the quality of a post.

You are equating a reaction score to a popularity contest of sorts, I pointed out how my solution is different.

Whatever, so long as you are happy.

I think it’s a great idea, but I need to play devil’s advocate. Would a forum like that end up going by the wayside after a couple of months of novelty?

That is defiantly a risk. How can we test it?

We could start in Member's Picks by broadening the forum description. Something like one post of each member that another members would like to write up.

IF the number of posts becomes significant, we move them into a new forum dedicated to fav members under the Best of ScubaBoard category.
  • Should we promote a common format? A few kudos followed by favorite links?
  • What would the forum description say?
  • How should the Welcome to Member's Picks sticky thread be changed?
