That's precisely what they do. Go out to Seattle, Washington and sign up for their class. Start thinking outside of the PADI, NAUI,SSI, etc box. It can be done better, and GUE is proving it.

Sorry DD that’s a bit out of my way. But I would love is for you to show me video of 6 people that have never had Scuba gear on before with a single instructor put into a pool and taken through the appropriate skills to make them a competent novice diver without ever touching the bottom of the pool. Man that would be good enough for Funniest home videos, when was the last time you where in any way involved in teaching a BOW class ?

Does not matter what I am thinking outside of, every single agency starts students with basic skills kneeling in the pool in water shallow that they can stand up in, for safeties sake. You drop 6 students in a 3-5 meter pool one of them panics and races to the surface holding there breath on a lung full of air, and its off to the chamber for them my friend.

No I will continue to have my students kneel in the safety of the shallows to take their first underwater breath, but thanks for the offer

If GUE think they can do it without the use of the pool bottom the good luck to them, but I will continue to teach the essentials of skill building with the aid of the pool bottom.

As an aside ... I'd love to see a full video of your pool class without touching the bottom.

Confined Water Dive 3 Perf Req #1 says:

"Independantly establish neutral buoyancy under water by pivoting on the fin tips, or, when appropriate, another point of contact (both oral and low-pressure inflation).

Confined Water Dive 5 Perf Req #2 says:

"Remove, replace, adjust and secure the scuba unit on the bottom, with minimal assistance, in water too deep to stand up in."

I don't think my camera's tape would cover all of the class..
And I'm not an instructor. But then again, I'm not teaching this class. Instructors are. And they are getting results.

I don't care what every other agency is doing. That's my point. This agency goes above and beyond the minimal, and their students are showing that it can be done.

Ok that sounded good but I agree it is a wacky requirement. I think it stems from solo diving. In the extreme event that you have to get out of your BCD make an extreme correction of some sort and get back into it - well guess what even as a beginner - you now can <lol>

You don't have to do it on one tape or even one session - just capture all the skills being demonstrated - in reality it should barely fill an hour. Of course it would be better if it showed the students never touching the bottom, but I'll take just seeing every skill demonstrated off the bottom by an instructor. Be sure and leave 20 seconds before and after each skill so I can see continuous buoyancy being maintained - no breath holding etc.

Here's the skills I'd pay to see:

Mask removal and replace, 30 seconds of breathing on a free flowing regulator, all remove and replace skills, and the controlled emergency swimming ascent.

Solo diving? They had this requirement before they endorsed solo diving!! Solo diving's another thread....

Didn't they used to make you drop your rig at the bottom of the pool and get out. Then dive back in and put it on at the bottom?? Maybe the remove/replace will go the way of that soon...

These are the ones you want to see? The remove and replacing BC is questionable at best, but the rest of them aren't that hard to do in the water column...you can do them, right?

So are you saying the BOW does not have a video attached to it, Don't the students get to watch the skills before even getting into the pool with no bottom?

I am sorry DD but GUE is just not for me, I believe it is possible to teach students to be competent recreational divers with the courses already in place by the major agencies, I can say I really love teaching the courses supplied, the agencies provide me with all I need to make really great divers.

So for now until GUE is proven as a far superior BOW course by someone, and that might take awhile as there are no GUE instructors in Australasia. The cost comes down to a level that can compete with what I charge now, and teaching materials and support to the same standard that I receive now, then I am afraid GUE will not be my preferred agency
