does this mean that if i buy from Lp now that the products will be under warranty, or do i have to wait.

Just my guess as to what might be going on here. Leisurepro's success in scuba retail is based primarily on very favorable prices (and also on their great selection). So accepting mfgr price restrictions is unlikely to be a major part of their plan here. I believe Oceanic has aggressivly persued LP's sources, apparently with some success. I also understand that Oceanic is allowing it's discontinued gear to be sold without the std mfgr restrictions. That means there are some great savings opportunities on past years models thru local and internet retailers. I suspect this is the market the Leisurepro has its eye on in becoming an authorized dealer. This will enable them to purchase large quantities of gear just before the "new" model is about to be released; enjoy whatever value there is in offering mfgr warrenties directly to their customers; and still operate in the high volume, discounted price market they are focused on. While I would expect them to offer the "new" price controlled goods (IAW mfgr restrictions), I don't imagine they expect to sell many.

Why wait?

My of the LDS's that post here will match Leisure Pro's price and they are full authorized dealers that offer full warranty.

So you can buy now at a great price & still get full warranty. What more could you ask for? :D

awap, I'd say you hit the nail on the head! I've got quite a bit of Oceanic gear and allot of it has been bought on closeout through authorised dealers (Scuba Toys, Divers Supply). I wonder how LP coming into the picture will affect the availablility of these closeout items to other retailers? When they offer closeouts do they simply drop the MAP for what the retailer has in stock or offer special orders?

When a product is being discountinued, they drop the MAP pricing....They sell of the remaining stock, sometimes at a discount.....and the dealer can do what ever they want with pricing....Alot of times the pricing will come down a bit, but the dealer still has the normal price in it. We dont have to just sell things off, I do a pretty good job, so far;) , of keeping inventory levels right where the demand is, so we dont usually get stuck with alot of inventory when a product is discontinued. However, some bigger places, will have overstock, and thus another way LP got some of their stuff....Gotta love the gray marketers...they buy in bulk get bigger discount, then just sell to LP and make money.....Funny they dont really chime in here or on any other threads:no

I'm wondering if this will hurt Oceanic overall, since it means Oceanic gear on LP goes to MAP pricing, but the grey market gear from other manufacturers stays the same price. Some percentage of customers are going "I need to find the cheapest price on a Oceanic Veo!", but I suspect a number of customers are "I need a cheap computer!" and this may price Oceanic out of the running on LP.

Of course, LP may sell for cheaper than the MAP, just not advertise it. Actually, speaking of which...

:hijack:
Is there a price below which gear isn't allowed to be sold? I purchased a VT3 from one of the two LDS I frequent, and got a price that is somewhat below the MAP. I was chatting with one of the owners of the second dive shop, and the topic of it came up. He asked what I paid for it, and when he found out he said that he "wasn't allowed to sell it that low" and implied that the other shop shouldn't have been able to either. I asked if he meant he wasn't allowed to advertise it that low, and that wasn't what he meant...

Yes, if everyone was on a level playing field, it would be better. We can sell for any price - give away a computer for a buck if we want... just can't advertise it.

As far as if this will hurt oceanic as other brands will be cheaper gray market, that is also the reason that we no longer carry ScubaPro... they would enforce pricing on us, but let friends of management bootleg to gray market outlets in huge quantity. I believe (without tying to speak for him) that is why you saw a lot of posts on shops dropping aqua lung.

In the long run, the support of products has to be through dive shops and authorized dealers, and if the manufacturers don't have policies that address the gray market - legit shops will simply turn to other brands.
