I recently moved to Gainesville and was checking it out on yahoo maps and I noticed that there is tons of lakes around here!

Ok, maybe not alot of lakes, but I am from Fernandina Beach/ Jacksonville, so I've not even seen many lakes and only been in 1 lake that I can remember (kingsley lake).

But anyways, does anyone know if any of these lakes around here are diveable? Or has anyone tried to dive one of them?

Some of the lakes I have noticed are:
1. Lake Kanapaha
2. Paynes Prairie
3. Bivens Arm (around the corner from my house)
4. Lake Alice @ UF
5. Hogtown
6. Levy Lake
7. Ledwith Lake
8. Orange Lake
9. Lochloosa Lake
10. Newnan's Lake

And I am sure that there is more that I didnt list.

If no body has dove these lakes, anyone up for a little exploring? :D

I haven't been diving in any of the Florida lakes, but I have looked at them with the thought of it. They don't look that great. I'm guessing the visibility to be pretty low based on what I could see from shore. With so many springs so close to Gainesville, and much better visibility, I'd stick to those. If you do dive them and find anything though, let us know.

from all i've heard, the visibility blows chunks

and there's always the pleaseant encounter with Mr. Alligator at the bottom to look forward to

I didn't even think about Mr. Alligator! But look at the bright side of things...at least you won't have the anticipation when you see Mr. Alligator...because you won't see him! ;)

well, i guess if i am gonna do it, i better do it before the water warms back up

u down andy?

The whole Kingsley thread has got me interested in giving lake diving a try. If you find one that doesn’t look like something out of swamp thing let me know I might want to give it a shot with you guys.

i think that "you guys" may be one guy too many

YOU guys have a blast

I'd like to see you dive lake alice :)

I'm up for spring diving. Lake diving doesn't seem very viable in this area.
Troy spring and manatee spring are good dive sites near you. The visibility is nearly unlimited and the water temp is the same year round. Lakes will be cold, 0' visibility, and as mentioned before infested with gators and fishing line.
