Hi everyone,

Just wanted to see if anyone has taken this course and if you have, can you share your experience or pass on some words of advice. I took my open water course in August 2003 and have had about 20 dives under my belt. I really want to take this course and have heard positive things about it but would like to hear any personal remarks on it. I'm very excited about it but I know it'll be intense so I can't help but feel a little intimidated. I'm starting a strict regimen in hopes I'll be in better shape when it starts next month.

10 weekends, over 100 hours of training, all for under 500 bucks just seems to good to be true.

Thanks for any advice or words of encouragement!

I have not taken it, but I will be taking it this year.

I know several people who have taken it (and a few who are going to be teaching it this year), and through them I know people associated with running the program. It's a really good program with lots of pool work and diving, as well as lectures on many subjects. The instructors are all volunteers because they love diving and believe in diver education.

I've even heard of previous years graduates that are excited about some of the events on the schedule this year and hope to join us for specific dives.

Sorry I can't really answer your questions since I haven't taken it yet. Wait...I just noticed...you really didn't ask a specific question. :D

Yeah, I'm taking it too. Looking forward to it. Even joined the Y last week so that I could make sure I can do a 300 yard swim. And found out that the Y closes the pool without notice, and doesn't even tell the girl at the desk who answers the phones. So guys like me who have to drive a long distance thru traffic to get there get very PO'd because they show up on a Monday night to start their lap swimming and some clueless kids tells them that the pool is closed and there's nothing that can be done.

So while the song says "It's fun to go to the Y M C A", don't believe it.

I know the guy who runs this, some of the instructors and many people who have taken it. This is a great course run by professionals well versed in Southern California Diving. And, as you point out it is a bargain. I have also been to some of the course sessions.

I have never heard a complaint about the course. You should definitely take it if you can. It is guarenteed to be valuable.

Actually, one thing I should have mentioned in the second paragraph is that a lot of the instructors have been through the program in the past, and believe in it, so they volunteer. The LA County scuba education program has over a 50 year history, from Al Tilman and Zale Perry to the present...

Uhh...I think The Village People had a different kind of -- never mind.

Anyone else doing ADP this year? There's gotta be more than three of us on the board.

I'm officially jazzed. Last night I knocked out 300 yards, nonstop, in 10 minutes in the pool. The class requirement is 15 minutes. And afterwards I did another 150 yards just for grins.

BTW, either of you guys know where the Victoria Park classroom is for the class on Sunday? Didn't see directions or map on the website. Also, did anyone find out how late the classes run?

Victoria Park is located at 419 E. 192nd Street in Carson, CA 90746. It's right by the 110 and 91 freeways. I actually just called over there this morning and they said that this Sunday is just orientation and lectures - so no gear required. I'll bring my suit just in case but I'm pretty sure we're not getting in the pool. The lady I talked to said it starts at 8 am but that we should always plan on being early. Not sure how long it'll go though.

mccabejc- where did you read about the physical requirements? Are there any more? I better time myself tonight!
