I just got my OW certification today and plan to visit Key Largo in december. I hear it's the dive capital of the world. I did a search online and also on this board and came across an endless number of dive operators. I mainly hear about the Spiegel. Do you need your AOW in order to dive there? Can anyone reccomend any dive shop or possibly a dive more appropriate for a newbie. Thanks

Most any of the operators in the Keys are pretty good and there are a couple of them on this board that are well worth you looking up.
The Spiegal Grove is def an advanced dive and most ops will not take you there with out AOW and some deep experience......IMO if you do find one who WILL take you with OW and a very few dives, find another dive op fast. There are plenty of reefs and shallow reefs for you to explore until you get some experience, then do the Grove if you like.

With most reputable ops yes you need your aow or proof of recent deep diving experience. I would not recommend trying to fudge on this. The grove is 140 or so to the sand and the currents can get very tricky very fast from what I've been told. It's why I waited to plan a trip to do this dive until I had a few 100 ft plus dives, drift experience, learned how to properly shoot a marker, did a couple dives requiring deco, and feel very comfortable doing this type of dive. A year ago I had 23 dives at this time and even tho I had my aow elected to turn down an invite where one of the dives would have been this one. I now have 88 dives, nearly finished with DM, have done the deep specialty, and gotten what i feel is the experience to do this one, including a couple solo dives in excess of 90 ft. Get your AOW, perhaps even nitrox, and then dive as much as possible between now and then including deep and dives in current. Just because someone has an AOW card does not mean they are ready to do the dives they've gotten a taste of when there is no instructor or DM or EXPERIENCED diver present.

I have plans on being in Key Largo next month and am also looking for a good dive operator and have found Silent World but have not read any reviews on them. I am alo looking for a shark dive that I can take while in FL. If any on can help please post.

I don't know about shark diving, but HMS Minnow is a good, small operation. I dived with them last year and am going, again, in about a week. I've never heard ANYBODY say anything bad about them.

I always refer people to Amy's. They can get you any type of dive you would like and are very good to the patrons. They can take you to a lot of beautiful reefs and wrecks in shallow waters.

If you want a small boat and great DM's, I recommend Blue Water Divers. Brent is usually on the board now and then and they provide great service. The big cattle boats aren't much fun to me. I prefer a group of 10 or less and also like to have input on what reefs to visit. You get that with Blue Water. http://www.bluewaterdiver.net/

They offer accomodation packages as well which are literally steps from the boat. Ramada or Holiday Inn are good. I hope to go back this summer for a quick trip with them.

Just came back from a trip not long ago. Go see Brent at blue water divers, smaller boat, great guy, lots of fun. Will use hem again next time!http://www.bluewaterdiver.net/
