If you watch the last 2 episodes of Storm Chasers they do fly it and they have video on board that show the deployment of the buoys. It sounds like they were very successful getting data this way and also I guess the good news is that the plane came back both times.

Yeah, but as I understood it, they're doing it the same way I do. Record the flight, in flight, then you download it from the camera when/if you get the plane back.


The other way, you're getting real time data from the plane.
 
Real time data would really be neat. You could even adjust your flight plan based on what you are seeing.
 
Real time..live..is always better than after the fact...
