I was supposed to dive with Kyalami on Sunday. I had a strong feeling they would cancel after being north of the Palm Beach inlet on Saturday. It was rough Saturday, and Sunday was forecasted to be rougher. I called the Scuba Club dive shop to ask what they were thinking, and they did what some dive shops do, heavily lean on the side of positivity. So much so, it was almost annoying. They were saying conditions were GREAT today. I'm not sure what ocean they were going out in. I didn't even see their boat, which I usually do. I called another number for the Jupiter charter, and they ridiculously told me that Sunday would be 2 ft seas.

So, when the same lady who said it would be 2 ft seas called me in the morning, as I was driving through Jupiter about 5 minutes away, told me it was going to be 5-8 ft seas, I wanted to call her out on her 2 ft seas prediction, but instead I just said to issue me a refund.

I get it, they have a business to run, and they made the right call to cancel. I would just like a little more honesty. Tell me the truth about Saturday's conditions, Sunday's forecast, say you're watching it closely, and that if anything changes, you'll give me call.

On the flip side, it could be worse. My cousin and I went to the Jupiter inlet park to see what it looked like, and we saw JDC high tailing it back. JDC leaves 2 hours earlier, had all the divers on it, went out the inlet, probably all geared up, cancelled, and then have to reload your vehicle. I at least got to sleep in 2 hours and didn't offload my stuff.

I just wish the shop and the charter would be more honest than saying conditions were great and the next day was going to be 2ft seas. They lost a little of my trust in that I can't rely on them to report accurate conditions if those conditions aren't favorable.

....... trust in that I can't rely on them to report accurate conditions if those conditions aren't favorable.
I 100% trust the ScubaBoard member conditions reports. Whether its Zero lobster, Zero GG's, Zero viz OR .......Top to bottom, 80 degrees, Whale Shark, Rode a Great White's dorsal,,,,,, I believe you >>cause we know where you live and we'll find you if you "be a lying to us kin folk" .

Sorry you got cancelled at the '~dock', that part isn't right.

I think a lot of charters have a policy that once they leave the dock there are no refunds if they cancel due to weather.

I’d have serious heartburn if a charter got me boarded amidst iffy conditions and then returned to dock from an inlet.

I expect charters to be better at their predictive analysis.

I’d rather be on the dock wishing I was on a boat than on the boat and wishing I was on a dock.

Diving in Palm Beach County can be tough sometimes. Most of my dives out of Jupiter for the last 14-15 years have been with JDC. In general, they have been very good at cancelling trips in the late afternoon on the day before rather than making a decision the next morning. Sometimes I have thought they were too conservative. I have never had a dive cancelled by JDC after showing up in Jupiter. On two occasions I have had dives cancelled after we were away from the dock. One trip was with Capt. Tim where he made 3 good runs at the inlet before deciding it was too dangerous. The other trip was with Capt. Brian where we were getting absolutely beaten by the swells. About half the boat were students finishing OW. We returned to the dock. Both of these trips were refunded by JDC

When my primary trip out of Boynton or Jupiter was cancelled by conditions, I used to hustle and try to get a ride out of Palm Beach. Sometimes I was successful but often the conditions ended up being quite sporty. On a few occasions I was struck by or ejected off the ladder, or took a fall, luckily, with no serious injury. Now that I have hit the age of 70, I'm more conservative. When my primary trip is cancelled, I take the day off and go for a nice bike ride. I often ride to the Boynton inlet and watch the waves break across the entire inlet, sometimes over one or both jetties.

I would dispute the charges at that point. Especially in this case where the day prior was rough, and the following day was forecasted to be worse. It was also well known in the news that the following day was expected to be 100% raining almost all day with the chance of some areas receiving a foot of rain.

Anybody have a conditions report, particularly visibility?

I have a morning beach runner friend in Juno. He said waves are 'over his head' this morning. We are going to chance it on Monday and search for pockets of viz. It's really strong east winds and that should push clear blue water inland. Worried about Lk Okee at 16ft height and the storm DUMPED north of there which drains into it. So SFWMD will open the flood gates more. Sunday should have divers in the water also. I just need 10ft viz, a line of rocks & a compass
