Ski patrol are mainly volunteers, no one has to take lessons to ski.

True, if you enjoy having your heel folded into your ear and having snow pounded up every bodily orifice.

You know with Craigslist, you really don't have to take diving lessons either. Just make sure the 25 year out of hydro Luxfer tanks you buy are full.

Oh, look. My 20 month old second cousin and 3 year old second cousin with their parents teaching them to ski.

Just like their grandfather (my uncle) taught their father (my first cousin) to both ski and scuba dive. Just like I skied as a 2 year old. Never took a lesson until I moved from Maine to the powdery hills of Lake Tahoe and couldn’t carve a turn.

I would never advocate learning to dive without an instructor, as it goes against the ToS, but thousands of people did.

Maybe tens of thousands.

Just like skiers.

In other words, they had instructors--it just happened that their instructors were family or friends who had no official recognition.

Exactly. As stated a number of times, certification agencies invented a C-card, and diving insurance.

Which now seems to be in some sort of crisis.

Scuba and Skiing don't really have much in common. All these skiing comparisons really don't make much sense, IMHO.
Skiing is pretty straight forward. There is no dcs, so safe ascent speed, no narcosis, no gas planning, no gear malfunction really, etc.
There is a reason people take small kids skiing but not scuba diving. Falling over as little kid is pretty normal... not being able to breath, not so much.

Agreed. A better analogy might be driving lessons....you can still get taught by a parent or sibling or friend, without paying, but you can't (legally) drive without a certification. Diving has tried to provide that certification without involving a government entity....

Skiing vs diving is a terrible comparison when talking about instructors. I’d put money I can blow most of your doors off (on a snowboard no less) and I’ve never had or wanted a lesson.

@Wookie , you must not ride Tahoe very often if you’re calling our hills powdery. We have Sierra Cement 95% of the time ☹️

LOL.

I said “most” lol. I’m fully aware that 2 edges are superior.

I just don’t like the insinuation that skiing instruction and diving instruction is on the same level. Ski lessons are for children and spouses so dedicated riders can get morning runs in without feeling guilty.

I’d NEVER drop anyone into a pool with dive gear and say go for it.
