The first time on Grand Cayman was 1976, (just passing through on the way to Costa Rica) there was a small little wood box they called the airport. The first trip to Grand Cayman for a 4 day trip was in 1980.at the Cayman Islander, the cost was $200., it was the first time I snorkeled, (I was hooked).
The seven mile beach was not all hotels like it is now, and Treasure Island was an abandoned project.
After certification we made trips to Coz, Bonaire and Cayman. Each place has it's beauty.
On Coz. there was begging, and if you rented a vehicle there were many living in substandard conditions, the price certainly was cheap and the diving terrific.
On Bonaire the diving was wonderful, eels everywhere, Klien Bonaire was a site to behold (not anymore since hurricane surge destroyed most of the great diving around Klien), Bonaire still is the easiest shore diving in the Caribbean.
Back to Grand Cayman and the diving was terrific, then on to the Brac where we were introduced to valet diving and some fantastic sites, this happened in 1988. There wasn't much on Little Cayman. In 1989 Little Cayman got electricity. I think it was in 1993 Little Cayman Beach Resort opened. Diving was unequaled as far as wall diving as well as marine life.
We have been to the Brac much more than Little Cayman, when we stayed at the Divi on the Brac sometimes we would dive Little Cayman everyday. The Brac is fantastic but Little Cayman has the edge over any Cayman as well as the Caribbean and we've been to more than a few places.
Little Cayman is not the best in the world however as there are places on the GBR we've been to that beat any Cayman Island, and certainly after our visit to Papau New Guinea we would claim PNG to be an overall winner as diving has so much to offer it's unbelievable.
As the Caymans are so much closer and easier to get to, in my book Little Cayman wins the Caribbean, Turks & Caicos is a close second or third.
