I like to have my own stuff for several reasons. Cayman Airways has an allowance of 55 lb. The only potential problem is that some bags might not go with you on the flight and end up being delivered to you later. Best to take essentials as "carry on" which on these small planes means gate check.
 
We always bring our own gear (BCs, fins, regs, etc.) We pack the regs in our "carryon" that we surrender to the crew at the door into the plane in GC to make sure it gets on the plane with us. They have a 55# limit, but the price for going over is just $0.50 per pound, so going to 60-65# is not pricey at all. They also are somewhat spotty on when they actually collect the fee. They only seem to collect it on the way from GC to LC about 1/3 of the time, but they always weigh everything and collect the fees from LC to GC.
