I am itching to dive this weekend. Is a 3mm shorty wet suit enough for a key largo reef dive? Its freezing down here!!

If your cold on the surface then I would say you will be a little uncomfortable in the water with a shorty. The water temp. Is what will be critical.

NOAA buoy data says the water temp (I assume at the surface) is 75ish.
NDBC - Station MLRF1

Cold tolerance is an individual thing but for me, that's too cold for a comfortable dive in a shorty. It's even a bit cold for my full 3/2 suit. I could definitely do the dive - but I'd definitely be cold the whole time, and even colder back at the surface with forecasted high temps around 70*. dive #2 (assuming there is one) would be downright unpleasant.

two 60+ minute dives yesterday on the SG and I was getting somewhat chilled by the end of the 2nd dive, water temp was 77F. wore a 5MM fullsuit with a 3/5MM hooded vest(I do chill easily). water temps by the weekend are going to plummet, air temps only upper 50's to near 60F for the highs today, mid/ upper 40's tomorrow AM(upper keys) and continued below average temps forecasted thru Monday. don't forget warm clothing on the ride out to the reef/wreck, it was cloudy, in the low 70's yesterday topside with a 15+ knot wind and it was chilly!!!!!!!!!!!

It wouldn't even be close to enough for me. YMMV.

Going out Friday, planning to wear a 3mm, hopefully will update how the dive was

You will want, at a minimum, a full 3mm and a 3mm hood (hood makes a huge difference). Also, a boat coat or windbreaker so you can stay warm during the SI.

Thanks for the information. Looks like a dive this weekend is not going to happen unless I pick up a full suit. Plus I just woke up to 40* weather. its a little too cold for a shorty on the surface before, between, and after dives.

Let me know how it goes. Are you going to be wearing a spring suit or full?
