I think they either need to just leave it open, and attempt to inform everyone NOT to go down there without proper skills and training, or keep it closed.

That's the way many cavern to cave sites are - just a warning sign. I can see SR leaving it locked forever tho - well, until the 80 ft bottom caves in on the volcano throat below...
