I like the analogy that I read somewhere else on ScubaBoard. The person that posted the message compared not using a STA with not wearing underwear. The conclusion was that while comfortable, it was a bit sloppy. :eyebrow:

I'm not anti STA. There are benefits to using a STA, extra weight being one, and the ease of switching from a single tank to a set of doubles is another.

However to say that it is not possible to have a secure, wobble free single tank rig without a STA is simply not always the case.

The reason most "STA-Less" designs allow the tank to rock is the bolts that are typically used to secure the wing to the plate. These bolts end up directly between the tank and the center channel of the back plate. These fasteners are in fact pivot points.

By eliminating these pivot points, and by providing an elastomeric "cradle" between the tank and the backplate tanks secured to a DSS backplate is very rigidly secured.

Without a STA the tank is closer to the diver's back, this has the benefits of easier valve access, and less of an over turning moment.

Tobin

I like the extra spacing between my head and the first stage, the DR Trans Pack gets the first stage too near my head and ocasionally I hit it.
With the BP and STA, I got pleny of room for my head and still have access to the valve.
