I know there are already recent threads regarding this topic but not enough assurance has been given to us more inexperienced divers. I have dove for many years, but only one vacation week every two or 3 yrs on average. I purchased my first equipment in Nov 05 and used scubaboad to narrow down my choices. I had never even heard of bp/w till reading scubaboard. After researching on this site, I purchased a DSS system and used it for the first time last week on a dive trip to the Carribean. It worked flawlessly. It was rock solid on my back without any slipping, the buckle which I worried about stayed secure and buoyancy control was the same as traditional bcs. DSS does not provide any instruction diagrams on how to rig the DSS with hogarthian webbing but there are threads on scubaboard with internet links to pictures which are excellent. I found I needed pliers to pull the webbing through the plate and then a rope cutter to trim the ends of the webbing. But it was very easy to do once I had the appropriate pictures/diagrams & pliers in front of me. And since it was all new to me, I found myself calling Tobin a couple of times and he was very accesssible both by phone and email. One great thing about doing it all yourself, is in the end when you are in the water you really feel as if you know your system.

Tobin and his crew do a nice job with their products, don't they!

Louis and all,

Do you find the corrugated inflator hose is a bit short? Maybe I am used to my old one - as you can see from the pic on the left (my old jacket BC), it's down to the middle of my chest. The one with my DSS wind barely passes my shoulder. I'm going to dive it this morning...

The length of this hose is just right. It will seem short if you haven't used one like this before... especially if you are used to using the Oceanic alt-air inflator which is itself very long. Also, keep in mind that the standing position is not the best position to check certain measurements... instead, you should be horizontal.

Everyone new to BP/wings will likely think the DIR/Hog corrugated hose too short... This is one of those things that will feel better the more that you dive the gear. It would also help if you had someone that is good with this stuff to lend a hand.

I would suggest that you put Tobin's hose back on and just dive it for a while.

You may not have your plate high enough on your body. Snug up the shoulder straps. This will make the hose reach further.

The hoses are shorter than you may be used to, but all you need is to be able to get it to your mouth to orally inflate, any longer is unnecessary.

I thought twice about the short hose thing too, but after a few dives i'm good to go. Tip " just give it a lite pull before you use it."

I thought it was a little short at first too but tried it in the pool and liked it as it doesn't hang like my old bc set-up.

Going to be trying out a BPW setup next week, Not sure what I'm looking forward to more - seeing Mantas or trying the BPW. Well, at least the BPW is guarenteed to appear :P
