With a steel BP and Al 80, and wearing a well-worn 3 mm full suit, I need just 2-4 lbs. of lead, which I place in trim pockets on the cambands. I believe this setup is "balanced"--I'm able to hold a safety stop with a nearly empty tank and to swim up to the surface with a full tank. If you've got more wetsuit and/or newer wetsuit, I could see how you might need 7-8 lbs. I have not dived a single steel tank, so I can't comment.

With an aluminum BP and Al 80, and wearing a new-ish 3 mm full suit and well-worn tech shorts, I need just 8 lbs. of lead, which I split between trim pockets on the cambands and a belt. I believe this setup is "balanced"; I'm able to hold a safety stop with a nearly empty tank and to swim up to the surface with a full tank, and with some on the belt I can remove the gear and not be super-floaty.

I've worked this down to 8 as my skills have improved; I could probably work it to 6 but I like being able to easily hold a stop at 10FSW if I want to, and I think this would get marginal.)
