ChrisM,
We need to get you out more. There are some great dives in Malibu including Malibu Road.

True, I could use more Malibu exposure, but when Vet's is 10 minutes away, Malaga and PV are 15 minutes away....... (and Malibu is an hour in traffic on a weeknight) well, it's just too good down here

Melvin,

Now we are talking! I will spend some time on your realty page and maybe give you a call when I come out in January if I am ready to look at that point. Thanks for the info!

thus we (mostly I) would need to be close to LA. [/QUOTE]

Given you need to be close to the studios...otherwise, I would have suggested looking at San Diego...but...if you had to live in LA (like me)....you must live near the water...South Bay...Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo Beaches come to mind...which would offer great beach dives...all around PV (Palos Verdes)...you would than be very close to most of the dive boats (Long Beach and San Pedro)....

Good luck...

that would be nice.

Jane call my accountant and see if I can deduct the cost of diving as an advertising expense.

No problem. Happy to talk to you about the area and what will work best in terms of $$, Time and Space.

I have yet to hear a bad thing about San Diego from ANY living soul. I will make it a point to visit San Diego when I finally move!

As for LA, we got tix for a January visit. I will be flying into Long Beach on the January 22nd and then returning to COLD NY on January 30th. My wife will join me for half of that visit as her job isn't as flexible. We are going to spend the 28th and 29th on Catalina Island. Hey, we have to have some fun for our 7th anniversary!

We are still looking into hotel options on Catalina. So what's with the Hermosa Hotel? Very cheap and cool looking from the photos but why so cheap? We don't mind basic hotels as we don't spend much time in the room. We dive, eat, dive, explore, dive, eat and then sleep! I can't wait! Catalina looks awesome! Again, thanks all for your time.

The motto of the Hermosa Hotel is sleep cheap at the Hermosa. It is a old hotel that has not been modernized very much. Some of the rooms share a bathroom between them. Some have to use a bath down the hall. They have cabins that have baths and kitchens. The cabins are the best if you don't want to share baths. It is the least expensive hotel on the island and usually full on weekends. It is a great place if all you want to do is eat, sleep and dive. They have storage for scuba gear and even a place to rinse. What they don't have is heat. Generally this is not a problem because they give you plenty of blankets and this is So Cal. Avalon in general is great fun with plenty of things to do besides diving. Great little shops, many varied resturants and one magnificent theatre in the Casino that shows a movie twice a day. Casino Pt is where most of the beach diving is done. Even on a day when there are two hundred divers at the park you seldom see another diver in the water. We have stayed at the Hermosa Hotel many times. It is a good value for your buck. But it is not luxurious. Rustic would be a pretty good description. Where ever you decide to stay have a great visit. Oh yeah, the Country Club for that anniversary dinner would be a winner IMHO. Good luck.

You'll hate LA....Ha ha Just Kiddin I moved here in 1989 and said I would stay 5 years to check it out....It's been 15 and there is still some diving to do. And....it's the gateway to the south pacific...The traffic sucks but thats the same anywhere in the US in Medium to Large cities....Water temp right now 64 Drysuit not required but i like it more than shivering between dives....You can't beat Cali for it's opportunities and off shore nature...Just a lil chilly compared to the gulf stream....Hope you enjoy it !!!!

That's for sure!

Sunday at Laguna, the water was nice and toasty, but the air was only 44 degrees when I got there at 6:15 am. I could have used a dry suit just for the surface interval! :11:

My wife and I went out to a rock quarry in Penn. this past weekend to do our last dives of the season. It's called Dutch Springs and is about 1.5 hrs by car from my home in Queens. We had a blast but it was also 44 degrees and raining all day long. 52 degrees at 75ft. Not too bad for the north east in November. I will be pleased if it isn't colder than 44 degrees when we visit in January. (crossing fingers)

Again, thanks all for your time and energy put into this thread. Just to update, we just won a 2002 Thomas Guide to LA on ebay ($3) and I ordered the Diver's Guide to Cally's Best Beach Dives. Also, I have been reading the archived articles at California Diving News and have found them to be a great source of info on Cally diving as some of you suggested. I now know way more about Cally diving than I ever thought I would. We also bought a book about relocating to LA.

Now I need to learn more about the actual neighborhoods. I will need to be closer to the studios for work and my wife probably won't have a job by the time we move. So, our thought for now is to be centrally located between studios and diving at first without breaking the bank. It looks like Compton would be a great spot (centrally located and wouldn't break the bank) but...

How about Hawthorne? Inglewood? Baldwin Hills? West Hollywood? Oh heck. LA is HUGE! When I get there in January I need to look at areas but which ones to narrow it down to? Redondo Beach and Torrance look reasonable and nice and close to the water but maybe too far to drive to work for me. HHHHMmmm. Most of my friends live around Valley Village. Seems nice and affordable but a long drive to Vets Park and other shore dives. Ultimately being closer to work is more important so if I have to drive to dive at first then I will. Like I said, I just drove almost 2 hours to dive in a freezing quarry and I LIKED IT! Where do you all live and why do you like it?

I like living in Altadena because it puts me just outside of the hustle and bustle of L.A.

I live four blocks from the National Forest, so I can go mountain biking and backpacking right from my driveway. I've got a nice view of downtown L.A. from my deck. I'm 10 minutes from Pasadena, which is quite cosmopolitan. Hollywood and all that it entails is only about a half hour away. Diving most places is usually about an hour away, tops. Ski resorts are only about an hour and a half away. I love to eat and I have a great selection of restaurants close by.

Having said all that, I lived most of my life around the Los Feliz area and knew lots of people that lived around Valley Village before it was called that. I really don't miss those areas at all. Where I live now reminds me of what Los Feliz was like before it got too crowded.

I would suggest that you have someone who knows L.A. show you around. You probably don't want to wander through Compton looking like a tourist. You can go from good parts of town to dangerous parts of town very quickly around the L.A. area. I imagine that this is no different that NYC.

Hope to meet you when you come to town.

Christian
