I understand what you're saying, but your argument completely ignores the legitimate legal concept of punitive damage. I think that may definitely be coming into play in this situation.

In these type of cases they usually shoot for the stars (high damages sought after) in order to get to the top of the tree.

IMHO, you sue someone to recover damages. They slam into your car, you sue them (if necessary) to recover the cost of repairs and any medical costs. In my view, that's what's right and just.
