I think you are totally right. I have also little bit of ADHD, so my mind is constantly going from place to place. Even little bad thought (like when I'm not sure about navigation), raises my heartbeat and of course that affects my air consumption too

Does coffee calm you down ("paradoxic reaction")? If it does you may have to install a p-valve in your wetsuit, but that's a small price to pay...

I had week ago weird morning dives where everything went super well:
- Slept almost 5 hours (Usually I can sleep 2-4hours)
This is your problem. If you're regularly sleeping only 2-4 hours a night that's having a catastrophic impact on your mental and physical health.

Hello Tycksel

dmaziuk has written about coffee as test ( if paradoxic reakttion ) for ADHD .
A doc. told me that he uses Ritalin for the test . Ritalin speeds up common people ,
and slows down poeple with ADHD .

There may be something you can do during a dive to slow down your mental activity ,
as prusas has written .
What works for me is to close the eyes , let it become dark and say to me
" dark " , or " nothing " , or imagine a very slow swimming turtel or some similar .
Take the reg. out of your mouth and hold it in your hand . This already activates freediving mode (for me).
Float or take off the mask . The water on your face activates or increases the diving reflex .
If you are diving from a boat, simply pull yourself down on the anchor line without gear and wait.
If you have to use a mask because the water burns your eyes and nose, you can close your eyes.
The important thing is to experience “you are a diver” and not just a guy who can operate diving equipment.
End your scubadives with a breathhold before you come out fo the water .

It's a spectrum though, e.g. for me it(*) just doesn't do anything all the way to "say hello to my new friend".

*) The real thing

Even though I drink quite a lot of coffee, it makes my heart rate faster and air consumption rises when I drink coffee before dive.

Friend uses ritalin so he can party whole night without falling asleep, but for me ritalin just puts me to sleep and slows me down

I did a PFO heart test to see if I had a hole in my heart. I don't, However the heart surgeon doing the test wanted me to relax as much as possible. So I did, to the point of basically being lucid. My heart rates drops to 52 - 55 beats per minute. Surgeon is like dang, that's slow but not a danger.

I go diving 3 or 4 dives a day so I can get a good long nights sleep. A deep sleep from at least 10pm to 6:30am if needing to be at a dive center at 7:00 am for a 7:30am dive.

You could try taichi: it's a bit easier that plain sitting meditation as your mind has to keep track of the movement and doesn't wander off as easily. Deep "meditative" breathing is well known to reduce heart & breathing rate, plus doing while moving is closer to "athletic" type training. (That would typically be jumping jacks or jumprope while keeping your breathing deep and even -- not forcing it, but the longer you practice it, the slower it'll become.)

Hello Tycksel
I found a breathing exercise on the net for falling asleep for people with ADHD.
Inhale into the belly : 6 sec. pause : exhale : 6 sec. pause . the whole thing 10 times .
From apnea diving I would still take over exhalation twice as long as inhalation .
I assume you have already tried something similar.

FWIW in meditation you typically "visualize" air coming in through the nose, down the front into lower belly on inhale, then down and around the pelvic floor, up the spine, and around the inside of the skull back to the nose. That makes exhalation longer than inhalation: not twice as as long, but it could be something like 50%.

PS it is also the case in swimming: your inhale is typically shorter than exhale.

I always shave maybe 5mm under my nose and also use chapstick before dive. It doesn't help 100% but little bit help at least.

Been suffering from this insomnia over 10 years, tried bunch of different meds & doctors, but no help. I've used to this though. Can't even member when I've had over 5h/night sleep
do you take coffee ?
