I think the assumptions about the Quick Draw vs. sling are inaccurate. You don't remove a sling bottle. I can see a lot of problems with giving someone a bottle to use and hold.

Why wouldn't you remove a slung bottle? I don't know about ponies but as far as deco bottles and stages, this is SOP for OOA situations.

What he said.... and they won't have to hold it, they just clip it.

I would give them my long hose. Always donate what's in your mouth. So much faster than removing anything if a diver is in distress.

I'd donate my primary too. If someone just ran out of gas, I'm not about to give them the opportunity to do it again. At least if they're on your hose, you know you're both going up.

Can't you just imaging handing an OOA diver a 19 or a 30 and watching them wave "goodbye" and continue their dive?

Intially yes but once the emergency is over (they have some air in their lungs), I'd hand off the stage (e.g. in a cave no reason to do the exit air sharing on the long hose when you can just give them that 80).

In an OW recreational situation, I'd give them the pony reg and once they've gotten their breath, I'd hand off the pony.

This is purely hypothetical because I wouldn't dive a pony and if I were, I wouldn't dive it with the long hose. I think the two don't make sense together.

Btw, I wouldn't just send them on their way, I would escort them to the surface.

As an aside, this is one reason I hate ponies. No one is taught the protocols in OW or in any other class so we all just extrapolate from other protocols (e.g. deco bottles and stages) to how a pony should be handled. Of course with deco bottles and stages you've got doubles on which changes everything a little bit.

What I would probably do (since I've thought about now), is donate the long hose and then personally clip off the pony to the OOA diver, if I felt they were under control. I would be worried about handing a pony to a stressed diver and then they drop it. I've seen stressed OW divers do some strange things. I don't dive with a pony either, but I have made deep recreational dives with a stage of backgas that could be used as a pony.

Because I dive an H-valved 130cf with a long hose recreationally, and many times carry a slung 19cf pony....it is very simple...on an OOA situation I donate the long hose,,switch to my necklaced alt. and maintain control of my pony---at that point the dive is 'called' and we exacute a standard o/w accent with me in control. My pony is primaraly a contingency gas supply for me.

Actually I am not doing any cave diving, there are a few caves, (ginny spring and blue grotto) that are my current favorite places to go, that you do not need anything other then OW certification to dive in the cavern zone.

Ginny is blocked off by a grate and Blue Grotto is unaccessible past about 100' so yes there will be a "rock over my head".

Yes my experience is not very extensive (around 20 dives now). But I do think that in an OOA situation, that I would be better off reaching for my pony reg before I swim to my buddy. Also at times it is not uncommon to be a little separated from my buddy while looking at rocks or playing with a little fish.....:D

I use the ultimate pony bracket and it is super easy to mount. It mounts to the pony with a bracket and hose clamps then to the primary tank with a cam band. It can be adjusted for any size tank.

Likewise... pony mounted upside down for easy access to the valve.
