You just have to dive in the right spot!
Saw a video Konrad Fry (TheFryChef) posted on You Tube showing the run off in Orange County. After seeing it, I don't think I'd dive the mainland until the dry season!
One potential problem for mainland divers coming out to the island to dive its much clearer and cleaner waters is that all the runoff "from the mountains to the sea" may bring enough new silt into Long Beach that the Catalina Express boats may have trouble maneuvering through the channel from their Downtown Landing facility. So far I haven't heard of any problems. The Army Corps did dredge recently so this may not be a problem this year.
I think surfers, swimmers and snorkelers are much more susceptible to getting sick from being in the ocean after it rains because they tend to hang out in the "mixing zone." Divers, in my opinion, are much less prone to getting sick from the run off as we tend to stay well below the mixing zone. That said, like others, if the viz is good, I will dive while it is raining and/or right after it rains.
Well, I plan to give it a shot (in La Jolla) this coming Saturday. Vis is my only real concern.
Quintin and I are going out this morning. I'll let you know what the viz is like later today.
