Seeing a lot of the whining about what will the hurricane do to my vacation really incenses me. People in the affected areas may lose everything they have and you're out the price of a trip, wah, wah, wah. GET A CLUE. If you go to Cozumel during October and do not take out some form of trip insurance, you're an I-D-I-O-T. The Yucatan peninsula is very susceptible to hurricane activity and even trip insurance doesn't guarantee that you will get to dive once you're there.

I've been to Coz numerous times during the last part of October and believe me, it doesn't take a hurricane for the harbormaster to shut down outgoing boats. I've been fortunate to go out 1 day during 3 potential days of diving when the Coz seas were rough because of a disturbance going on somewhere in the Caribbean. Choose your dates of travel wisely and gear your expectations accordingly.

I understand that people are concerned about their vacations and their favorite diving spots...you've worked hard and you want to enjoy your vacation.

However, if you are writing between now and the next 48 hours to make reservations, ask how the vis will be, or whether or not you should cancel your trip that is not until December...the price for a two tank dive just went up to $500/tank :05:

I will be offering a PADI Hurricane diver specialty for those interested, although I don't recommend it :05:

Clearly we are trying to keep the mood light here. But seriously...please be patient with your dive op, hotel, etc. on the island now and after the hurricane. It is very likely that we will be without power and/or communications for the next several days or even a week or more, but I assure you that we will all be doing everything in our power to become operational as soon as possible and to get the island back to the Caribbean paradise we all love. Remember how fast we were back in action after Emily?

Remember, you all ARE our livlihoods and we WANT you back and we want the island to be able to take you back ASAP!!!!!

Your patience and compassion during this time is greatly appreicated!

Godspeed to all of the Yucatan and those next in line for this monster :07:

In case you hadn't noticed, I started this thread back when Wilma had just become a Hurricane! At that time it wasn't supposed to hit Coz, just pass near-by. Naturally, since I've never been to Coz (or anywhere else for that matter) I wanted to know what the possible effects were going to be.

NO ONE, had any idea that it would make direct landfall on top of cozumel.

So if that's me Whining, and being an IDIOT, fine.

No worries. when starting the thread, your concerns regarding your vacation were quite natural.

Likewise, when I replied to you that all would be hunky-dory, I had no idea that the storm would suddenly jump up to Cat 5 and veer west. Sorry about that.

No need for an apology from you ggunn, the this Wilma has been particulary hard to predict, no one is sure exactly what it'll do next!

Rottielover,
I owe you an apology. I got really frustrated last night reading all the emails regarding Coz and said some things that I regret saying. My bad. I hope you are able to reschedule your visit there or elsewhere soon.

Thanks scubabum2, all is forgiven. Eveyone is on edge right now..

Our trip has been officially canceled with full refunds, i'm in the process of re-booking something else becuase my wife's JERK boss won't let her re-schedule

Had to respond to this. My Discover Scuba dive was a few years back in St. Croix as hurricane Debby came in. I think I get to claim the hurricane diver c-card. The most important skills of the course included rapid descent to avoid getting beaten and drowning in the storm surge and catching the ladder on the boat as it rushed down toward you without getting crushed. As an added bonus, riders on the boat got to learn which side of the boat to get sick from in heavy seas. What a great course. Needless to say, we were dropped off at the pier and the boat was immediately moved to a safe harbor upon return.

Note: This is not meant in anyway to minimize the impact to those in Coz. I dove there for the first time in August and have been watching the news carefully. The island is rather flat, bad for hurricanes.
