calwolf:
am wondering how realistic it is to expect to get 5 divers in to Point Lobos on one of the weekday mornings without reservations. I've heard if I get there early (what's "early"?) on a weekday they often haven't filled all 15 teams... but I'd like to make sure we dive there at least one of the days we're in town. I've done ~30 dives in Monterey and Carmel but never at Point Lobos, so I'm not sure how the system there works. We would have two buddy teams, although one is a triple since we've got 5 divers total. Are they okay with that?
You can almost always get into Lobos on a weekday without a reservation, if you show
up a bit before the park opens at 9. How early is a "bit"? Well, I don't dive Lobos on weekdays,
but do quite regularly on weekends. I get there at about 8:15, and I'm invariably the
first car in line. That gives me time to setup gear in the boat, and launch a few minutes
after I get into the parking lot (it's a lot easier to make the turn onto the ramp if there
aren't any cars parked in front of the bathrooms yet). You would probably be fine
with 8:45, I'd aim for 8:30 (but I'm a chronically early person).
Officially, it's teams of two, but if you ask nicely, and it really is a team of three (and
not some scheme to get six divers in on two reservations) they are usually cool with it,
but you might get some by-the-book-newb ranger.
Whaler's would be a great place for your four newbs to get introduced to REAL diving.
