Since you guys have been discussing Point Lobos, I figured I could get away with interjecting a question of my own in the thread. I'm leading a group of 4 new divers from Logan, Utah to Monterey for a week of shore diving (May 15th-20th), and am wondering how realistic it is to expect to get 5 divers in to Point Lobos on one of the weekday mornings without reservations. I've heard if I get there early (what's "early"?) on a weekday they often haven't filled all 15 teams... but I'd like to make sure we dive there at least one of the days we're in town. I've done ~30 dives in Monterey and Carmel but never at Point Lobos, so I'm not sure how the system there works. We would have two buddy teams, although one is a triple since we've got 5 divers total. Are they okay with that?

Also... any recommendations on cheap motels would be appreciated. I remember just cruising Munras ave til we found one under 50 bucks a night... not sure of current summertime prices though. We're all college students, so $'s one of our big considerations for the trip.

Thanks,

--Jesse W.

You can almost always get into Lobos on a weekday without a reservation, if you show
up a bit before the park opens at 9. How early is a "bit"? Well, I don't dive Lobos on weekdays,
but do quite regularly on weekends. I get there at about 8:15, and I'm invariably the
first car in line. That gives me time to setup gear in the boat, and launch a few minutes
after I get into the parking lot (it's a lot easier to make the turn onto the ramp if there
aren't any cars parked in front of the bathrooms yet). You would probably be fine
with 8:45, I'd aim for 8:30 (but I'm a chronically early person).

Officially, it's teams of two, but if you ask nicely, and it really is a team of three (and
not some scheme to get six divers in on two reservations) they are usually cool with it,
but you might get some by-the-book-newb ranger.

Whaler's would be a great place for your four newbs to get introduced to REAL diving.

My Saturday just freed up, so I'd love to join you guys for Monastery (or wherever). Conditions are looking pretty promising.

I might be up for a Sat. night dive and/or Sunday AM dives too.

There were 7 spots available at Lobos on Friday as of this afternoon.

If you are going to go and don't have a reservation, make one.

I'm planning on stopping by with my wife for a dive out to Beto's Reef to look for the monster GPO we saw last weekend. If you want to join us let me know.

Anybody interested in a pot luck lunch? My wife makes a good Chinese Chicken Salad ...

If any of you guys want to do a boat dive on Sunday afternoon, I'm signed-up for a 1:30 PM two-tank trip on the Sanctuary. Last I talked with them, they still needed 2 more people for a quorum.

Bob: Too bad you won't be in SoCal - you could get some pictures of the REAL Redondo...
