I originally posted this in the Accessories Forum but only got a couple of replies (thanks to those that did), so I'd thought I'd ask the question of local divers.

Has anybody had any experience of using one of these - good or bad? It looks like it might be very useful for determining bottom depth, which would be particularly helpful for a number of our shore dive sites here in San Diego.

Thanks for help.

I haven't used that one but I do have a depth finder. I, of course, can't remember who makes it. I do like it and have used it often, not only to tell me the depth but to tell me the horizontal viz. I am terrible at guessing distance.

I know that someone in So. Cal. will come up with the name. There are several of us that have the same brand. It is yellow. :D

Here is the one Anne Marie is talking about:

It seems like the one you link to may have more features... Anyway the Vexilar is pretty great for diving... You never drop down before it's time!

I've also got the Vexilar and am happy with it. The one that LP has does look like it has more features though.

I got mine refurbished. They sell them refurbished at the Vexilar Outlet here:

It looks like the price of the one on LP is right between the new and refurbished one.

I'd be interested in seeing the one from LP since it looks like it has more cool features.

I've mounted a Garmin Fishfinder 80 on my kayak...

with a mount from these guys...

...and fixed the transducer to the inside of the hull with epoxy. The cables go through a homemade through-hull cable mount, and the battery is stored in a little pelican box.

The fishfinder profile screen is nice for noting changes in bottom terrain, and helps us determine where to drop anchor. I also mounted a GPS so that I can mark waypoints, paddle to dive sites, etc.

Do you know, have you determined whether the Vexilar is waterproof to 130ft?

I've had it down to 110 feet. I think it's supposed to be rated to 200 or 250 feet. I thought that info was online, but I didn't find it.

I think Sean may have had his deeper.

Thanks for the information Christian.

Sadly, can't make the Wrinkles dive on Saturday - out of town. Will be at the Shores on Sunday morning though.

You're welcome.

I'm sorry you won't be able to make it this time. I'm actually driving back to LA on Saturday this time, so I won't be able to come down to the shores on Sunday for some extra fun.

Hope to see you at the next one though.

I have the Hawkeye. Had it for about a year. LOVE IT.

I use it all the time in my Float Tube (Fly fishing, etc.) and only recently started using it for diving - specifically for shore diving (to determine the drop, etc.)

Works great - easy to read display, etc.

Its a winner.
