1.) I'm sure it's been said, but that damn snorkel. In my 1st OW dives it just seemed like it would be the mouthpiece that I would inadvertently put in and not realize until 4' deep or so. I realize it was a skills problem but it was cumbersome and just got in the way.

I haven't used mine for diving at all past OW (but it does stay in the bag).

2.) My 1st pair of hand me down fins had the rubber strap that had to be tightened on every dive. What a pain, not to mention I'm donning fins for 3 minutes while everyone else was waiting and ready to go. Those older fins now reside in the basement.

3.) During OW (and really still to this day)... I'm a cheap SOB. I didn't think there was a difference between a snorkel mask (which I had) and a scuba mask (which I had to buy). My 1st few dives were horrendous with the limited view provided by the cheap snorkel mask. It was like having tunnel vision. Now with a wider scuba mask I feel like I can take in the dive 100 times better. (Still cheap DGX frameless mask, but world's different).

Problem wasn't mainly that the hood had a weird jawshape and pulled my jaw back so far that it closed my larynx... The problem was that it kinda glued itself to my ears so I couldn't equalize without having to lift the sides of the hood. For cavedives in 4C water... not gonna happen. And... I was fairly happy with my Waterproof hood, so the K01 only got one chance...

fair enough. i recall something similar, though nowhere as severe when mine was new.

Have you dived and used an Air 2?
I have. A properly tuned air2 breathes about as good as a properly tuned s600. That is to say, just fine. Perhaps the one you used needed service.

Edit: fixed regulator name

Interesting comparison. Second vs first stage. Did you mean another second perhaps?

Snorkels get a bad rap. I never use one when diving but i sometimes use one on beach dives swimming to and from dive site (often 500 yards or more from the beach).

If the vis is good, the snorkel allows me to see cool stuff -- i once had a pod of dolphins swim directly beneath me and i wouldnt have seen it but for a snorkel.

If surface conditions get choppy, sometimes it's easier to kick face down, which requires a snorkel when my tank air is getting low.

A snorkel is a tool - sometimes it's the right tool for the job.

this Xdeep DSMB is driving me mad

that stupid strap at the end does not fold or wrap around the DSMB
its made from this thick material and just dangles around

I'd have chopped it off but then where would I connect my spool

Argh
