I'll be in Norfolk for a business trip in October 2005, and would enjoy sneaking in a dive, weather permitting...

Strictly easy, please!
There are several dive shops that can hook you up, or we can try to schedule a shore dive for your trip.

Don Burke:
I am going to be doing some shore diving off the Outer Banks this year. I made a road trip and scouted a few locations. Some are pretty easy to get to.

Diving off Sandbridge is something I would like to try. False Cape got it's name because ships would turn into the coast thinking that it was Cape Henry. The military has been losing stuff out there for centuries, in earnest for the last sixty years or so.

There have been some gold coins found on the beach at Sandbridge. They came from somewhere. It would be a long shot to find a wreck out there, but the trip price is right and three or four dives a day could cover quite a bit of ground.

That sounds awesome.
I would love to Tag along my buddy and i have been doing some research on sandbridge ourselves. we have discoverd a little bit. there were quite a few wooden sailing ships that became stranded off of the Beach there its kind of a work in progress but we hope to find enough information to see if there might be anything left if that makes any sense at all.

I'm looking at the weekend of Oct. 8-9 (unless I've screwed up my conference dates). I'll post again when time gets closer to see if anyone is interested in a buddy for 1 day. :D

mmerte, sorry we hijacked your thread.

Don, I am interested in diving with you again? I am always interested in trying a shore dive. Still getting my Virginia set up together.

I figure starting off with one of the established dive sites off Nags Head would be a good idea.

After that, braille diving off Sandbridge would be on the list.

Did you ever get around to diving Sandbridge? I'm just back to the area and am looking for some local shore dives. Judging by the number of wrecks nearby, there should probably be something. Doug

From what I have heard and seen Doug, Sandbridge will have 0-3' of vis. You're better off heading down to the OBX and try a beach dive there.

BTW......you do realize you responded to a thread that is 8 yrs old???

Old or not, you've proven it's still a (semi) active thread. Thanks. Not much to choose from in the Hampton Road beach diving thread area - maybe I should start one.

Having snorkeled off Sandbridge over the years, I have seen both bad and good vis days past the breakers, with the majority being rather poor. From above, it looked like sandbars without much variation, which would make for a rather uninteresting dive. From my reading, I have found a number of early wrecks, but most seem to have been wooden hulls which would have disappeared into the sand long ago.

I understand that the OBX is probably the most reliable solution for better vis, but I haven't found much literature about good shore dive sites in the Northern NC OBX either. Any recommendations?

Thanks for your previous response, in any case.

Hey, I am living in Virginia Beach. Looking to connect for local dives. Shore, lake. No into spending a fortune for a dive.
