I'll split the difference and say '73

Just looking back at some old dive photos.

First you need to guess what it is.

It's clearly not a rebreather, although it may look like one at first glance.... To me it looks like an open circuit single-hose setup with a double-7 set tucked inside some kind of plastic housing.

It only has one regulator so it must have a manifold and the reg has a metal body so that kind of pins the date of the thing on his back between 1970 and 1975.

In fact, now that I say that it looks like those double 7 sets the cousteau team were using around the same time.

but the kicker is the gloves with velcro closures. At least that's what it looks like. I don't remember gloves with velcro closures until the late 80's.

My guess is about 1987 because of the gloves but he's using what would probably have been vintage gear even at that point.

Actually,if your have ever seen the James Bond movie Thunderball 1965 you will note that the "good Guys" have single hose regs while the "bad guys" have double hose regs.

I've seen that hard pack in a museum, it dates form the mid 60's to the mid 70's if my memory is correct. However the wet suit looks like it came from the late 70's. As a matter of interest, we just sank an orange one just like it in 80 feet of water, and made it stand up with some foam and concrete. It's going to freak some people out when they come across it, hehehe. But when the word gets out it's down there, it'll just be one more item divers will want to find.

So my guess is that the picture was taken in the late 70's, and just to put a date on it I'll say 1978.

Looks like the same stuff I dove with on Saturday!

The Cousteau teams had those great silver wetsuits and "backpacks" (for lack of a better word) in the mid-80's when I worked with them on the Rediscovery of the World series. However I think they came out to Catalina to test them about 1984. The design isn't the same as the one pictured though, but there are similarities.
