I've paper logged all of my 1,040 since 2005. Because PADI said to.....
I told PADI to pound sand on that point.

SW documents them. I only care about being able to demonstrate certain levels (like 100 for solo diver, 9+ dives below 100' as a prerequisite for a tech class...).

It's like logging instrument approaches - it's just to demonstrate currency/compliance. I have virtually no interest in the sentimental side of things. Just went through the exercise of throwing out tons of stuff my mom collected through my early pre-school and school years through 12th grade.

I did note the earthquake dive in the SW notes section because that was such a freak occurrence for me, but I think that's the only notation I've ever done.

I use SubSurface to log my dives. It's supported on the three main devices I use, (Iphone, Ipad and windows 10 desktop), and I save to local file storage as well as cloud.

SubSurface is "open source", which appeals to me as a code monkey - not because I want to get involved in its development - but because the developers aren't limited to a small company which might not exist in 10 years.

I log the dives because it gives me "data" as opposed to "I think". I download from my G2 which has lots of data points, and gives me pretty graphs to look at and think about.
