That is exactly what it is for. If you have a tech pass you can take tech 1 instead. AJ had a long running thread on the old GUE forum on this, as he thought it was silly, people should just take tech 1.
I still think it's silly and people should just take tech 1.

Half measures are for goons.

I do recall a previous discussion in which someone said Rec 3 might be a useful intermediate step for someone interested in Tech 1 who doesn't think he's ready for it yet.

"Half measures" seem inconsistent with my perception of GUE training. You're either ready for the next step or not.

I don't believe you can "fail" fundamentals 1, it is designed to introduce the concepts of GUE and give you the tools you need to develop a strong foundation of buoyancy, trim, stability, and control so that you may practice after the class has completed and before attempting fundies 2. Fundies 2 will have the normal provisional, rec pass, tech pass that a standard fundamentals course has.
Just to add some more info here - You can definitely get a "provisional" on Fundies 1 (I did) and a "rec pass" with a shiny card from GUE (wifebuddy did). Not sure about a "fail" but "tech pass" is also a possibility.

About 10 dives after my provisional (which was in a wetsuit), I did a drysuit clinic with our Fundies instructor and got upgraded to a "rec pass". It's been a year and almost 50 dives since then and we still haven't gotten around to doing part 2 (scheduling issues, mostly). I'm actually thinking of converting to doubles before I do part 2 which is probably going to push it out even more.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's plenty of room for growth and improvement even between the parts and, depending on your goals, you may not even feel the need to do part 2.

I've been interested as sort of a multi-day coaching.

I guess I am not surprised. So you wouldn't have been able to sign up for Fundies part 2 unless you at least got a rec pass in part 1?

that's old school gue training. get with the times

It always bugged me no end that I am certified to teach down to 40m, but if I want to put a dash of helium in for narcosis, even on NDL diving, I need to do a bunch of tech courses. Thats why i like the GUE/UTD Rec 3 level, just made sense as an extension of rec diving without the whole Tech tree getting in the way.

Not to go off-topic of GUE's Fundies....but that's not really true. IANTD has a course called "Advanced Recreational Trimix" (ART) that requires nothing outside of the "Rec-realm" (Deep-diver, Nitrox-diver, 30+ dives) that allows you to splash some He into your tanks to mitigate narcosis. I could be wrong, but I think you even get a depth-bump to 160ft and allows like 15min of deco. There are a few ART-type courses available.

Thanks, someone else just told me about that a few minutes ago :)
I hadn't even looked at IANTD yet.

You will have a terrible time on the written test at the end of f2 if you haven't done the lecture part of f1 & f2. Plus the swim test is mandatory for a pass and is done in part 1. I did just a f2 class in doubles (with two other guys in doubles), but I already had a rec pass in single tank. Mark and Kathy were running it, all of us got provisional. :(
