Nah. Underpaid and overworked, as usual. But there's nothing to buy here but T-shirts and beer, so the savings are good.

I'll ask our Science Diving Coordinator (a.k.a, "the dive god") why they don't use full face masks...

Sounds like everyone else payscale fits you then hehehehhe

Welcome from NZ.Are you returning via Christchurch? I am heading back to NZ this week depending on the airports being opened. Are you in McMurdo as a scientist or are you there as military or support? Did you go to the Mid-winter New Zealand party? I know they invite you guys over every year and set up flags so you can find your way in the dark.
I hear that it gets a little crazy as everyone fights the perpetual night time heebee geebees. You'll be glad to get out but you are lucky to have been there.
Cheers Big Ears,
There can be only one,
The Thunder From Down Under,
The Gasman.

Hey Gasman, good to hear from ya! Yup, I'm headed back through Christchurch, probably sometime in late October. At least, that's the plan. I just sent my boss a semi-joking message asking if I could stay here...

I'm one of the support crew, and Yup, I was at Scott Base for the mid-winter party. Quite the shindig!

Nighttime isn't bad here. The really crazy part is when we have to go back to the "real world". It's a bit overwhelming.

I can imagine it must be - after all that white and cold and not too many people... must a rather freaky to suddenly be back in civilisation (i.e. traffic, noise etc!)

I looked up the Oz Antarctic program - wow... no wonder it took you so long to get in - well done for persistance. Unfortunately I don't have any degrees in anything so I doubt I'd ever be even considered! (Probably better for me anyway :p)

Hey Mario... this is the Australian one. I only got that far...!

:)

Hey Mario... it's not down, it's the way I linked it . Dunno what I did wrong.. but the actual link is
http://www.antdiv.gov.au/

That definitely works! (Maybe you can tell me what I did wrong with my other link??)
Cheers

Lessee...

To get a job with the US Antarctic Program, Raytheon Polar Services Company is the prime contractor: http://rpsc.raytheon.com/

Other countries also have stations. Try http://www.70south.com/links/job_links

The NSF runs the USAP show. Their dry web site: http://www.nsf.gov/home/polar/start.htm

And of course the diving web site, http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/nsf/

And my personal ramblings about Antarctic life, http://60south.com/

That should all be enough to deter you! :D

Hey Glenn....

I am going thru your website.... it's fascinating stuff and far from putting me off is actually fuelling my interest... although after reading about the qualification process and psych tests I know I would never get thru. (Plus I don't have any real qualifications to offer, so to speak!) Damn... what an opportunity. I suppose it must have helped your application that you worked as a defense contractor and applied to the CIA (you admit that?? :p)...

*sigh*...I'll just have to keep checking back to your website to get my Antarctic fix.

Thanks for sharing!
:)
