Rather than worrying over a tiny amount of PCBs that will leeech into the environment over the next couple of hundred years why not instead call your congressman/woman and ask him about all those condos on the beach, where is the free beach access, all the concrete rubble and PCBs and all sorts of contaminates that go into the environment when the inevitable hurricane knocks all that crap down. Howabout worrying over the sewage and trash all those condos cause and the drain on the environment they cause and the habitat they displace and their ugliness.

A few ships sunk here and there are not the problem, the slaughter of our natural envionment by realestate developers and graft taking politicians is the problem.

Last I checked, the United Startes may have the largest Navy but certainly not the only Navy. Don't you suppose China, Britain, France, Russia have a Navy? Do you think their ships are environmentally friendly or some such as that? What about all those cruise ships y'all like so much, where does their garbage and waste go? and where do those ships go when they are done with them?

Has anyone here not noticed the wholesale destruction and all the horrible trash and pollutants that resulted from Katrina, much of it a result of over development of the coastline. We can do something about this by not letting the government subsidize over development with insurance and guarantees. Do people really need a home on our beach, do the condo and casino developers really provide a positve and lasting benifit to the community? Stop the insanity!

... and slow definitely makes it safe ... perhaps you've heard the polar ice caps are melting ... who cares about the future, its just too distant to worry about. <sigh>.

Actually, if we could store other toxic waste in as secure of an element as plastic wire cover, meaning, sealing it from being released into the environment, it would be an achievement. But no, I never heard that pcbs were causing the melting of the ice caps.....you learn something every day....

what will be happening to the water quality. All they have to do is take a few dives and collect water and silt samples off of Yap, Micronesia, Bikini Atoll or almost anywhere up and down the east coast. There they should find numerous ships that were sent to the bottom without the least bit of cleanup. Full of PCB's, asbestos, fuel oil and goodness knows what else that is considered harmful to the enviroment. They should be able to tell exactly what will be going on with the Mighty O in a few years. And for the record. I will volunteer to go with them to collect the samples, just to make sure they are not doctored in any way. Either by adding to or subtracting from the absolute sampling. Any takers?

The last I heard is that the Navy is still considering donating a number of ships to the artificial reef program, including a couple of mothballed Forrestal class carriers. I would love to see my old ship put down to a proper burial at sea instead of being cut up to be used as fenders on a car.

hmm, well in response to Diverbuoy's global warming comment, the world is coming out of an ice age and co2(and temp) are rising as of a natural occurrence; although, the excess amount of CO2 being pumped into the air is speeding the process up. this will just cause the next Ice age to come sooner. The earth is this amazing, dynamic ecosystem... and will cope the best it can, then kill us off and get back to normal.
As for the Navy comment... some of the stories about what happens while out to see.... yeah. not good, a scrubbed down ship for an artificial reef is the least of concerns.

Edit: Nemrod.... I would love to have a house on the beach.....

Highway 98 was a senic drive along the Gulf between Destin and Panama City, Florida 30 years ago. White sand beaches, sand dunes covered with sea oats breathing taking vistas and solitude, for 30 miles, then the highway was moved back a mile from the beach and now all you can see is high rise condos. Very little acceess to the beach and endless traffic jams. The same is about to happen between Gulfport and Ocean Springs Mississppi since Katrina. There is talk of moving US highway 90 away from the beach, guess what will replace it. Casinos and high rises. At least PCB aren't an eyesore.

So, it's a natural occurence that just happens to coincide with the industrial age and the rise in CO2 just happens to match the amount of CO2 which fossil fuel usage is pumping out.

Gosh, what are the odds...

Barry ... several thousand years ago the Netherlands were completely encased in Ice ...where did all that ice go and more importantly what caused all that ice to melt????...the industrial revolution???

Exactly Skull.
BarryNL, I wasn't saying that the industrial revolution has no affect on global warming, I am just saying that it isn't as bad as what was thought in the late 80's and 90's. More research is showing this is part of a natural warming trend that is being sped up by fossil fuels and the result will be the onset of the next ice age quicker then previously thought....say in 8,000 years instead of, idono, say 10,000...which we will have long since seen our rise and fall on this planet.

Uh, yeah, exactly. Duh or is it Doooh? Check this out Mr. Simpson.

BTW, this is not the first ice age/interglacial period the earth has seen and the others were before people had SUVs or in fact before there were any people whatsoever.

Don't you just hate it when popular science is not even science. N
