My understanding is that the CEO of Dive Rite is a respected cave/tech diver who designs diving equipment to address practical requirements and actively uses his stuff.

Gotta wonder how all of us have made it this long without all the buckles, velcro, d-rings, and straps.

Supply and demand.
Simple harness is also available from DR.
Do you think "H" is any better?

They all make fluff because fluff sells to certain people. More people buy fluff than not.
But that doesn't mean they believe in it or use it themselves, it means they are business people, that's all.

To you and the others who want to critisize people for not using the gear you personally like, I bet your car has airconditioning, power windows, power seats, external rear view mirrors, a radio and cd player and etc. you know, all that unnecessary fluff.

For Petes sake, get a life.

Oh my, it looks like you've found yourself in the same boat............... for Pete's sake.

Yes, I was talking about you too.

It is kinda sad that although SB has some wonder moments and can be very helpful to fellow divers not all threads are created equal. Yes, a lot of that is fluff and likely a compromise in an attempt to attract the recreational diver that is accustomed to that fluff. But some of it does serve a useful purpose in select divers.

I own and operate DeepSeaSupply. (see the link at the bottom of the page)

I am directly responsible for the design of all of our offerings.

I'm an active tech diver.

We used to offer a "complex" harness. It was a nicely executed piece of kit. It sold with nice margins too. I could again start offering these tomorrow if I wanted to.

I stopped offering them when I began to see divers remove them, either piece by piece, or all at once and replace them with a single piece harness. While it may seem trite, our "mission" has always been to deliver the maximum value to our customers, and we try very hard not to sell any goods divers really don't need. We had many divers coming back to us for simple harness kit, and virtually nobody that started with a simple harness returned looking for the complex harness.

IMO "delux" harnesses exist because a simple BP&W can "look scary" in the showroom of the local dive shop. Almost all new divers train in a Jacket / vest BC and a BP*W look stark, and potentially hard to use, if you don't know how to adjust the harness.

Most new divers are conditioned by their instructor / sales clerk that they will want to "move up" from their rented training BC to a "full featured" BC with lots of drings, lots of padding, endless features. $$ = Features = what you *really* need……..

Most dive shops either don't have staff that actually dive a BP&W, and as such they can't fit and explain a BP&W, they need BP&W's to essentially sell themselves, and the delux, comfort, magic 9 way quick release padded harness sells it's self better than a plain plate with a simple harness.

Shops that have qualified sales staff that dive and understand a BP&W have no trouble selling simple harnesses.

As I have said for years, don't let pre purchase perceptions override post purchase reality.

I've had dive shop sales staff tell me that a simple one piece harness was unsafe because it had no quick release shoulder connections in case of an emergency requiring a quick bail out and ditch of the entire rig. One day while helping the instructor in the pool with a class, he gestured to me to show the students how to do a doff and don underwater, with a smirk on his face thinking I Wouldn't be able to do it (we had been going back and forth about it previously). So I undid the waist strap, stuck me left hand under the shoulder webbing and was out in about 2 seconds holding the rig in front of me. Then I put it back on. Then I did another version where I did the reverse Mike Nelson, then the Mike Nelson Don, all in the deep end right off the bottom in mid water.
The instructor never said another word.
