Only a few hours ago my husband and I were discussing this very question. We are virgin divers scheduled to start OW course in 10 days time so these questions are very important to us!!

Thanks for starting the thread:)

Hi Brizzolatti,

You must be expecting it to be a pretty 'Scarey' course if you are already starting to ask where the toilets are.... before you get on board.

Just remember,

"There is nothing to fear except fear itself.".......

..........and seamonsters of course!:eek:ut:

Aquamore

Say high to Bonnie Scotland (the Brave) for me and....
....may your bubbles flow forever upwards."=-)

Natasha, you'd be disappointed if I didn't show up in the women's section from time to time.

Ber Rabbit,

wall = bulkhead
door = hatch
stairs = ladder

Actually stairs are called companionways if they are part of the accomodation. Ladders are found in hods and along the side of the vessel (i.e the accomodation ladder). Oh and the ceiling is called the deck head (not to be confused with specific members of the diving party who often have similiar names!)

achu, most heads are much more sensitive than the typical bathroom and the operation varies from boat to boat. As for wanting a head vs using the ocean, that depends on water temp. In warm water, it doesn't matter. In cold water, I want a head.

Kelpmermaid is right about the big boats out here for the longer trips. We often have to board at night for the next day's trip, & we would be in a pickle (or bucket of brine) if we had no head.

Clean? Well, as some have a shower in the head that soaks the whole thing, the only trick is to make sure the TP is protected from the post-dive shampoo squad.

I have yet to find one so disgusting that I'd rather swim back to shore. I don't really see a way around peeing in a wetsuit. With all the pre-dive hydrating one must do, then the elaborate cold-water protection (layers of neoprene), we often find ourselves racing for the water to get some relief. Perhaps wetsuit fastidiousness is one of those tropical things. I use a variety of fruity-scented shampoos from the 99 cent store to freshen all accesories after every dive, then fresh-air dry them outside (the desert air toasts out even the fish pee.)

WHY are bathrooms called "heads" on boats?

Judy

Who is nautical enough to know that you can put a boat on a ship, but you can't put a ship on a boat.

oh.

ick.

thank you.

While on my last dive trip a couple of weeks ago on a boat in Cozumel that had a head...yuck it was not even up to the usual standards. Basically a stand over the hole with a door to secure with difficulty. Ok for the guys but us women refused to use it. I had not had any problems or urgent needs to use it during the trips out on the first two days. Day three after our first dive during the SI a rain shower came up with some wind, it cooled things off and all 22 divers had the urge to purge when it stopped. Kinda funny, as one younger girl asked first can we jump in the water? Soon there after everyone was jumping in, the DM was laughing at us Americanos and told us we were turning their blue water yellow. Then the DM and his crew hands began jumping in, we stayed there for about 15 minutes just having fun diving off the boat and swimming around.

Ok, I have 2 questions...

What the hell is "Dawn"

All this talk of pee is fair enough but more importantly, what about when you need a number two?

Also.... Have you ever hired a wet suit that has been peed in a lot, you never know until you have heated it up with body warmth and then removed it post dive to that delicate smell of stale pee. EWWWWWWWWWWW

Walter once bubbled...

Personally I prefer head whatever the temperature.
